Really the smart thing was the blizzard route with just continually updating their game vs making a new one, but even that saw a decline in game quality over the years.
Honestly think the old engine upgrade they did a while ago was likely the last thing this game will see, and even then it was like two people in canada working on the whole project which is why it took like 6 years and the end result was making a 15 year old game look only 10 years old.
Of all the first gen mmorpgs, this was my bag. I would KILL to see this game ported to like UE4 or 5 and the combat modernized. The vibe and feel of this world is far better than even EQ/WOW's respective worlds. So few sci-fi mmorpgs too.
I dont mean to burst bubbles, but there will be no AO2, Funcom learned their lesson about mmorpgs already.
For that, Funcom sucks donkey balls !!!
IT was a theme park MMORPG.
The true nature of what we loved about AO, or at least I did was inevitably the new frontier of massive multiplayer gaming , but also
Our characters were a sandbox living in a sandbox.
The world was huge and mysterious, plus the many skills and the modifiers on equipment and implants enabling us to equip better stuff.
ANd knowlege and experience went beyond the game - The nuances and tips and know how, on how to do ingame things, like proper ways to pull certain mobs, or how to beat a boss - and that ever enticing chance of that nice piece to drop.
Leadership was really needed. Teamwork, and dedication.
For AO2 , personally would do so much better without all the chat bots and help bots, and just drop me into its world with nothing. But with so many survival games like even FC;s COnan survival game, it wouldn't fly by todays standards. and beaten to a pulp in the industry anyhow.
I just don't want to be bombarded by quest givers every ten steps of my journey. I loved hunting in early AO, farming spawns and getting to know the game, before all these cookie cutter setups were made public like in every thing out now.
I played a Solitus AGent and people thought I was weak, and yea I was squishier than an Opifex agent of course because they had the evades.
But FC -use common sense, give Solitus a lot more Nano then, would be considerate considering Agents use nano alot die to Mimic line, but I was nerfed as an Opifex in that department.
Tencent have stated they have to plans for Funcom to make any sequels or add on's for any games.
IIRR Dune is the only real big project they have there hands in, tbh I was surprised when Tencent bought Funcom,I couldn't see the value of in the big picture, then again no one saw COVID either so I guess that changed a lot of ideas and plans.
AO2 will only ever be an indi project or a bought or leased IP from funcom/tencent.
In modern days AO2 wouldn't fit in tbh, to many cancel culture and finger pointing critics and "bang wagon" jumpers would complain about everything.
look at how the movie industry is ruined and ruining films, and the gaming industry isn't to far away. ( some changes are great and very welcome, but some of the classic stuff should be left classic.
On that note I just watched Spiderman, No way home, and Garfield is my fav and always has been!!!
Yeah, the big sandbox thing while exploring the world without any story or obligatory
fetch quests playing mail boy, and how unique it is apart from games today is what made me stick by it. FF11 have some of that too, except it also have stories. But as with all old games theyre mostly a rush to endgame now for many. I've been a freeby for many years playing of and on but recently started playing more, reached level 80 now and able to explore new areas. Got a friend with me i usually explore with, since we barely go into any dungeon. I play as an artrox martial arts guy with no seemingly game breaking features, just classic martial arts. With plenty of healing items and a few ma skills and buffs as of yet. Before some kind player lended me credits and i became a millionaire, i tended to grind up credits on my own for exploration supplies, like healing stuff. But having been donated alot of money it gave me ability to buy a flying vehicle which didnt almost need any skill points in vehicle, so i can scout over locations now before engaging. I tend to raise the important stats first for the class with a bit over on anything else that implants or to get new buffs or skills need. I tend to manipulate the aggrobar in battles against unique enemies if they're going bad, so he will evade much more until the heals from finishing their cooldowns are more than how much damage the enemy will do.
I sometimes visit ICC after exploring for restocking supplies or afk'ing and sit under the plaza. If anyone sees an atrox with shades looking like neo except bulky from matrix then thats probably me. MMO's for me is about the journey, not the endgame. The endgame sounds boring since you will doing the same thing over all the time, and the same last content, like one dungeon grinding or something.
Edit: Level 101 now
