Free to play or not?

Hello, I'm trying to play with and old account from 2003 and it says that I need a paid membership, I thought this game had a free to play option now?

Edit: Ok I found out, It's not possible to downgrade your old paid account to a free one... Most stupid thing ever.

yup! is too bad. WTB an option for free month for coming back after all these years - believe me it is going to take more than a month to get re-aquainted with the game and sort through my bags. And set my hot bars and find all the old friends, and take a tour!

Base game is free, expansion content works on a sub.

But keep in mind if you ever sub, you will be unable to go back to free on that account.

Like, you can cancel your payment anytime of course, but then that previously subbed account can only be played again while you are subbed. And you'll need a second account if you just want to go back to Free-to-play. Accounts have unlimited free-time pre-subbing though.

You were probably just subbed at one time with your old account.

I keep having to reactivating my Froob account every month on their old account site.
It's kinda annoying and I wonder how long it will work. I know their customer support is useless, but anyone else have to do this? AO is great and nostalgic, but it's just not worth $15 month for a out-dated MMO with barely anyone playing. I never got into any of the expansions, the rest of Funcom's work is just garbage. To me, AO Classic was their 'One Hit Wonder'.

If you get to max level on a free accout tho, can you still choose perks for that character if you buy premium with expansions, or do you get perk points and stuff as you level it ? just a thought i had but im gonna stick with free for now. I've always been free and played off and on while going in blind trying to figure stuff out

you can go Paid at anytime and then your toon will have all their perk points given to you, to use at your own discretion. But once you go Paid, then you cannot go back to froob.

If you ding 200 on froob account then go Paid, you should get 20 perk points, automatic.
but Alien XP perks have to be earned by killing Aliumz,.

It used to be that way anyhow
