Anarchy Online

Anarchy Online via steam, via wine, via Linux same old problems...disappointment
When Anarchy online showed up on Steam I was excited. I had played it for years on Windows and when I switched over to Linux. It worked fine until Awesonium (sp) was introduced. Then it started crashing no matter what I did. I gave up for a while.
Being available for download via the Steam Linux client I was excited.

Downloaded and installed it, still crashed on Awesonium.dll. Or .exe, can't remember which but I saved the log of the attempt if anyone wants to look at it.

So when I originally installed it via Steam it world start and then in task manager I saw at least a dozen apps running/crashing. It seemed that an all of them would be in the process of dying except for the most recent. When I added the launch options as recommended in a previous thread it would open up in the character selection room with a login window. Username and password just gives a long progress bar and returns to the same input window when I log in. The username and password logs me in on their website. My account info says my account is active.

So I tried to install it a second time. This time I downloaded the installer from the Funcom website. It installed, did all the patches for Rubika and then when I started it from the desktop icon Wine created it loads up to the login/patch screen. It takes my username / password. Starts to launch the game and then crashes on a blank screen telling me that Awesonium crashed.

Funcom didn't have a solution 10 years ago and the forums don't have a solution today.

If anyone runs the most recent version (EP1 with all patches) in Linux with no problems I'd be very interested in how you solved this puzzle.

Oh, and by the way if you are going to suggest I to switch back to Windows or install Windows along side Linux in a multiboot fashion, don't bother making that suggestion. I loved Anarchy Online! But I don't love it enough to go back to Windows.

Have you tried using the "new" (DX10) client?

Just a shot in the dark, I haven't tried to run *anything* on Linux in many years :D

Obligatory "Just install/dual boot Windows!" :D (just a joke, hope you get a solution)

Edit: And I know this kind of fits in that category, but you could also try some kind VM instead of dual boot. The old DX7 client would probably be fine without any IOMMU passthrough.

I found a set of instructions that works. It did mean I had to install it independent of Steam, but it works. If anyone else need here it is.
