This is the easy way of making a shortcut for steam games:
Righ click the game name in steam game library --> A menu appears, select "create shortcut".
I am curious what other issues this is causing that are less noticable. It's great having Steam track hours played and all that but i swear its causing weird slowdowns. I do understand basically no one works on this game anymore but it seems serious enough to have someone work on the Steam client so we don't need to use workarounds that cause additional problems. Not to mention you can't even use the steam overlay in-game with the old client.
You will still need to run the launcher separately periodically to handle the Patches though. I recommend manually creating a shortcut to AnarchyOnline.exe in your Steam AO folder.
Also note if you make a desktop shortcut via Steam it will automatically launch with the startup parameters you set, so you won't get the launcher/patcher that way..
