Maybe just me, but id stick with the old one.
Caloss2 has a video how to optimize it a little and it helps ( if you got a nvidia gpu at least) but some crashes still remain even after that.
Yeah it's not just you. I stuck with the standard engine. Higher fps and I like the color/lighting a bit better in certain ways. Eventually if (that's a big if) they get around to optimizing it I'll be switching over to the new engine for sure.
Got not a lot of issues with new engine since monthes, the only bug i am aware of is you get sometimes stuck exiting a whompa, but i haven't seen it for a while.

I don't have an AMD card to experiment with, but I would certainly advise trying, if it all goes very wrong, you can always reset it. This looks the most promising tool for the job for team red http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/amd-registry-editor-download.html
