I found a fix for everybody who gets this error when stating the game.

1. Go to your documents folder
2.Get in the Spellforce folder.
3.Find the config.txt
4. Edit the line that discusses the sceen size, and make it 480x640 instead of what it's set as. Then start the game.

This worked for me on two different machines.

Also, try the run as admin, and compatability settings for winxpsp3.

Have a safer fix.
Just make your settings to potato(low) than load that thing(autosafe will do it) and leave put back up.

I tracked that problem down to the relation with the texture quality. At my system (xubuntu 18.10, proton 3.16-4, nvidia geforce 1050, standard graphic driver [not ppa]), I am able to set everything to highest value, except textures, and load the game.
During load the textures have to be at lowest possible setting. If the game is once loaded you can set it to highest value with out problems. (probably during loading scenes (map switch) it will make problems again - not yet tested, Alt-Tab-ing will not work every time correctly with high textures)

To anyone else having this, what seemed to be the issue for me was having the save games folder on an SSD. Moving that folder to a normal 'spinning' disk cured it. Did this by creating a symbolic link to the other drive on the Spellforce folder.
