somtimes it says "can't set desired resolution, install new drivers", or won't start at all; deleting your conf (conf.ual?) helps. Just set your resolution ingame again- takes only a few seconds.
Remember it`s an old game and doesn`t support 16:9/16:10 it uses 5:4. so you have blackbars.
1600:1200x32bit res for Spellfore1&2
Don`t run Spellforce2 as admin under win8.1 - i got some sort of a window then. Now it works fine.
XP, win7 home, win7 prof, win8, win8.1
btw check out the fanpages (wiki) give you background information on all the spellforce sequels;

it's a german fanpage
Spellforce 1 has serious trouble with 64-bit operating systems. It may work on 64-bit Windows 7 but it's more likely not to; either crashing or not running up at all and running it in compatability mode can actually make it worse.
This is all based on CD copies but I doubt that the Steam copies are drastically different.
Steam version works just fine on 64-bit W7 & W8.
I run Spellforce Platinum on Steam fine (Windows 8.1 64 bit)
IO have also encountered no issues with Spellforce Universe CD version on the same OS.
