SP1 is much better
I prefer Spellforce 1
why;
-just 1 error (cdkey but it can be fixed by going in admin mode and creating a character in every campaign and freemode)
- more character customization ( no skill trees and that alllows you to make any skill combination you want)
- changeable companions unlike in sp2
-factions are more unique and require different ressources (but you still need to go for the units with more HP & DMG)
-better story
-perfect hybrid (my oppinion (sp2 goes more into strategy)
NOTE: no rock-paper-scisors when it comes to units and the in the english version there is a lack in voice variation (as if 10 people gave voices for 50+ characters-units included) in the german version you dont see that problem ( from my experience since I played both versions)
I hope this helped comrade :)

If you still don't know I'd say its a matter of preference, 1 has the better RTS/RPG mix of the two and gives you the ability to go rambo on your enemy bses before building your fist base (until thenm they spawn no scouts which enables you to eradicate small bases all by yourself) on the other hand 2 gives you a better companion system, you see in 1 companions are runes, meaning they are stuck at the level you aquired them, your lvl 5 wizard will always be a lvl 5 wizard, in 2 your followers level with you and you can choose followers which you can actively skill instead of letting them autoskill giving you a much better control over them. That are the most important differences IMO, so you should decide for yourself.

SP1 and expansions
In Spellforce1 you have more control of the characterdevelopement (more like an rpg than in sp2)
More Races and more buildings (for each race). So Spellforce1 is more complex than SP2.
good storyline
cons: you have to travel/ move long distances; sometimes it takes a LOOOOOONG time; plays very slow.

SP2 better grafics, faster gameplay, good story
cons: characterdevelopement (you can't put points in attributes- you put points in skilltrees), less races, buildings.

Can't tell which of them is better, this depends on your personal taste/ preferences. For my part i loved the characterdevelopement in SP1 - but the gameplay a bit more in SP2.

They are great games and i would recommend to get both (they cost only a few bucks and are often in a bundle).

SP1 is a much better game in every regard except maybe graphics, and even then, SP1 has a more serious "stylistic" to it, while SP2 always struck me as a bit cartoonish (just look at the size of the characters' hands!). Overall, SP1 offers more variety and has a better RPG element to it, allowing you to beat the entire game without ever building a base or, vice versa, beat the entire game with armies alone, without needing your hero (except the missions where bases are not allowed, of course). SP2 lacks in that department. Also, the story of SP1 is more convoluted and twisted, while SP2 is your typical fantasy "save-the-world" kind of thing.

+1 Especially as i've encountered a game breaking bug in 2 that you can only avoid by skipping a certain conversation which is a bummer as i find alot of the conversations interesting.
Also i thought i'd list the changes in bullet point form. (no offense everyone else)
Spellforce 1
  • The avatar feels more enjoyable to play, instead of hitting a button like in 2 and Rise and Fall you simply zoom in with your avatar in view.
  • The RTS side is also really fun to play, most resources regenerate and those that don't you can find a way to replace them.
  • You can play as more than one race at a time, while they do share army space they don't share worker space.
  • There are more options available in terms of customization, especially with the avatar, you choose up to 10 skills to fill out your "class" so you can't be an uber heavy mage knight that can use bows.
  • The AI camps are pretty cool, starting off they send scouts to find you and if the scout finds an enemy base and returns alive the camp will start attacking said base.
Spellforce 2
  • Resources don't regenerate so you'll have to keep moving across the map if you want to keep playing in RTS. Although AI enemies (at least in free game mode) do feel more like bots rather than camps of enemies that mindlessly scout you out and charge your base.
  • The game is overall simpler, instead of finding higher level rune workers and rune warriors your current army and merry band of heroes, that does have the unfourtunate side affect of being able to ditch your heroes if you don't like them, but you can spend skill points as your heroes level.
  • You can only control one "race" at a time and there are fewer resources overall to collect with no special race specific resources, although you do start off with every structure unlocked in free mode (as far as i know as i play with the expansion content on SF 2 gold) and (with the exception to the titans in SF1) base building and unit training is more like a triditional RTS, which means no bases focused around a centeral monument.
  • When heroes die you can revive them either where they died (untill they bleed out) or at a shrine in exchange for lenya, can't remember if this affects your avatar though. You can also teleport your avatar to your heroes' location or your heroes to your avatar's location or a hero to another hero if they're too far away.
That might not cover everything as this is what i can think of at the moment but i'd say it does cover most of the big things.
