mana using troops if i remember correctly need food buildings to regen mana. (which regen health with warrior troops), so if you need mana for troops, build lots and lots of food buildings/farms, and food stores. I believe troops "eat" food to regen mana, health, etc

Don't worry many do the same thing and run into the same problem, the game isn't quite clear about needing food to have casters regen.

update. I think its just food stores, not stuff like cattle farms, grain farms, etc just the stores. It ways in the description used for regenerating. So if you use a lot of mages, or mage troops make sure any workers you aren't using are manning a food store to help with mana regen.

The slow rate of regeneration of both health and mana amongst your troops teaches a rather simple but important lesson: Even with a full-grade army, don't rush the map in a single push. It can and will spell disaster if you charge some enemy camps or areas and your troops are at half health and mana. Take your time.

I'd say the opposite is true - unless you are fast on your feet and rush as many camps as possible, you're gonna get overwhelmed by the ever increasing enemy spawns. Happened to me more than once when I just started playing. Hence my preference to not build bases at all - rather clear the map with the heroes alone to prevent the spawns.

And hence end the game being only level 20 instead of 30 because of simply missing so much experience. Especially in The Order of Dawn you can sit through hours in one place with a good defense. Also you get more loot to sell ....

Have you tried beating the game the way I described? You hit level 30 regardless of how you play, and you can do any quest in the game (and collect all the loot you want) with the exception of probably Amra & Lea, since the boss has way too high stats to handle.

I'm not a fan of just building a bunch of towers around the enemy camps and grind the experience - it's not challenging and I doubt that it's the way the game was intended to play.

yeah, I have completed the game many times in many different variants - and have come to the conclusion that doing the maps more RPGlike or actionlike (i.e. no monuments or heroes only) is always the way to fall behind in levels. And loot ... as long as you are a caster and rely on found or BOUGHT spells you can never have enough loot. Sure, for melees or archers it is irrelevant but casters need gold as long as they don´t want to play the "save - click on corpse/chest - not the right loot? - reload - repeat"-game. And for Amra&Leah : you are not alone on the map when you are at this queststep. Just activate the monument and build up 20 dwarven-defenders. You are good to go to beat the nasty skeletonguard including his friends :)

If that is the way the game was intended to play or not - just depends on your playstyle or the fun you get out of it.

Alright, I see you know what you're talking about. It's just strange that you used to fall behind on levels - I beat the game with a necromancer and twice with an elementalist while soloing, and I don't remember any troubles in getting to 30 at the end. It's been a long time ago and MAYBE I'm mistaken and my final level wasn't 30, but it most definitely wasn't early 20-es either - that'd probably make the later missions too hard to beat, too.

Yeah, that's the way I used to get the necessary spells. Without it, the game becomes much harder, but I didn't mind exploiting the reroll. It's probably not the way for everyone to enjoy the game, though.

That´s what I wrote - the game is all about how YOU get your fun out of it.
With a good (tower-)defense at your monument and a little patience you get so much loot that you don´t have to reload the game on and on ... just loot, sell what you´ve got and buy the spells you want/need :)
When "actioning" through the maps I reached barely level 28 (this level you need for the last ranks of your specialization) - done this twice, one melee and one archer to sum up my hero-Collection *g* With defending and a little patience lvl 30 on my other chars was no problem.

yep try different ways, theres many ways to do things and to see which you like better. You really can easily clear maps solo early if you want, but you lose out on much experience and loot if you aren't farming spawn spots. And then again farming spots gets boring and you might not like doing that much.

There is not really much to buy from stores other than the occasional rune warrior/archer to update your group, or stuff like buildings that you can pick up as you pass by into the next map, etc. I usually finish my games with thousands of gold sitting around and nothing to spend it on.
