Don't worry many do the same thing and run into the same problem, the game isn't quite clear about needing food to have casters regen.
update. I think its just food stores, not stuff like cattle farms, grain farms, etc just the stores. It ways in the description used for regenerating. So if you use a lot of mages, or mage troops make sure any workers you aren't using are manning a food store to help with mana regen.
I'd say the opposite is true - unless you are fast on your feet and rush as many camps as possible, you're gonna get overwhelmed by the ever increasing enemy spawns. Happened to me more than once when I just started playing. Hence my preference to not build bases at all - rather clear the map with the heroes alone to prevent the spawns.
Have you tried beating the game the way I described? You hit level 30 regardless of how you play, and you can do any quest in the game (and collect all the loot you want) with the exception of probably Amra & Lea, since the boss has way too high stats to handle.
I'm not a fan of just building a bunch of towers around the enemy camps and grind the experience - it's not challenging and I doubt that it's the way the game was intended to play.
If that is the way the game was intended to play or not - just depends on your playstyle or the fun you get out of it.
Yeah, that's the way I used to get the necessary spells. Without it, the game becomes much harder, but I didn't mind exploiting the reroll. It's probably not the way for everyone to enjoy the game, though.
With a good (tower-)defense at your monument and a little patience you get so much loot that you don´t have to reload the game on and on ... just loot, sell what you´ve got and buy the spells you want/need :)
When "actioning" through the maps I reached barely level 28 (this level you need for the last ranks of your specialization) - done this twice, one melee and one archer to sum up my hero-Collection *g* With defending and a little patience lvl 30 on my other chars was no problem.
There is not really much to buy from stores other than the occasional rune warrior/archer to update your group, or stuff like buildings that you can pick up as you pass by into the next map, etc. I usually finish my games with thousands of gold sitting around and nothing to spend it on.
