Some useful information
Just thought i'd post a few tips that may be useful to know if you're new to the game that aren't explained very well in the tutorial

Holding units

If you press 'H' while you have a group of units selected the units will hold their position and basically behave like your avatar. They won't attack any units unless they come within melee range. Ranged and magic units are an exception -they will attack enemies that are in the firing range of their weapons or spells. The important thing is that they will not move from their position which is useful when you are defending your base with a small army.

Patrol/Storm
Holding down alt and right clicking allows you to set way points which the selected units will walk along whilst attacking enemies on the way. Holding down shift instead of alt will make your units run along the waypoints instead of walk but they will not attack enemies. Holding down control will only let you set 1 (invisible) waypoint at a time but the units will always attack enemies they see on the way. Strangely enough if they start fighting enemies on the way and survive the encounter they will forget about their destination and just stand their waiting for orders.

Follow
If you want a group of units to follow a single unit select the group , hold down shift and then right click on the unit you want them to follow. The group will now behave the same way as your summons (skeletons, goblins, wolves, elementals etc). They will follow the chosen unit and protect it. Range units act a bit strange.

Controlling summons

If you make a Mage, black magician or white magician you may want to use the summoning spells. Summons will follow your avatar and attack enemies that get close to it. Your control over them is limited. You can only move them by setting waypoints for them to follow so only the patrol command works on them. This only works until they come across enemies. If they survive the fight they go back to following the avatar. It's actually possible to group them albeit one by one. You can do this by selecting one and then assigning it to one of the 6 quick-access groups. (The 6 arrows at the top centre of the screen - sometimes this crashes the game) Then select another summon and assign it to a different quick access group. If you hold shift and click on both quick access groups you will be able to group the two.

Speed up time
This is actually a cheat but still pretty useful
Open up the console by holding down control and pressing ']' or '#'. Then type 'AppSession:SetTimeMultiplier(2)'. This is case sensitive. Time will go twice as fast which makes side quests and finding loot less tedious.
