Will not start!

I'm running Windows 10 and when I click play it takes me to a black screen and then just returns to steam. The game does not start! Does anyone know a way around this problem?

You can try running it in a window by amending the launch options with the '-windowed' flag.Or try the old version plus a compatibility layer. However unpatched you won't be able to play at a resolution above 1280x800.

I've got the same problem as OP, and the game seems to at least start in windowed mode. However, my problem right now is that it's really immersion breaking for me to play in windowed mode.... Does anybody know of a way to fix this problem that does not require windowed mode?

Edit: While running in windowed mode, the bottom of the screen is hidden behind the task bar, making it impossible to borderscroll down as well as use certain abilities (like aoe spells for example)

Tried them, still does not work. I tried using the wsgf-patches for different reolutions, but it always says "desired resolution could not be found" when i run it in fullscreen mode (tried with 1920x1080, 1280x800, 1600x1200 patches and default resolution settings in game). Yet, in windowed mode it starts just fine, just with the bottom most part always hidden behind the taskbar.....

The thing is, I was able to play SF1 (v1.54) just fine about a year ago on my current PC (Win 10 OS), but it seems the current version of the game breaks itself.... (1.61 or whatever the number was...)

You can go to game properties in your steam library > betas and change version to 1.54 then install 1080p exe from WSGF and it should work just fine. However anything above 1080p doesn't seem to work for me, currently looking for a fix.

The only thing I needed to do to fix the black screen was go to the game in steam > right click bring up properties > Go to launch options > -windowmode -without
Other posts have mentioned that you can also swap out/or adjust some of the initialization files, I didn't have to do that. I do have slight 'clipping' at the bottom but I'm not missing any important text. I did also go to my task bar to make that stop from auto hiding and popping up, that made it stop appearing in game when mouse was at bottom (disappeared completely so just game showing)

@demonicon Most windows versions allow you to right click the taskbar and change options. For Windows 10 I was able to make my go away and stay away. The resolution though might also play into how much of the bottom is missing/showing. I'm at 2560x1440 with Win 10 and all but the very bottom "border" is visible.

If the game launches with taskbar over game try minimize to main desktop; then click game icon game to maximize the window again.

I have switched back to v1.54, solved all the issues I had (except now the music does not play ingame, but meh, I can live with that...)
