I just beat bugged Shiel!
***
EDIT: Just to make it clear for you - I'm talking about bugged version of the Shiel map. We've got widescreen/multiplayer patch recently, which accidentaly screwed the Shiel map. In the bugged Shiel there are 2 bandits camps that spawns like 20 bandits every second, making the map quite hard (if not impossible for some builds) to beat.

This is how it looks like: https://i.imgur.com/3fXxSsa.jpg

I wanted to share my excitement, as I was just able to beat the bugged Shiel without modding anything! :D

It took me few hours, but I finally did it. It wasn't even THAT hard, it was just annoying. I guess not all characters builds will be able to do it, but I don't know. Your character need to be tanky enough to take few hits and stay alive, and be able to take Utran Fortress alone.

All you vets know, that at some point in Shiel you get Dryad and her companions for 1000 Lenya, which cast Mass Extinction. So once you get them, it's piece of cake to wipe bugged camps. A short summary of what I did:
  • slip through enemy camps to reach Utran Fortress and take it
  • when you capture the fortress, your allies will move toward it from refugees camp. I'm not sure what happened, as I didn't watch, but in my game they somehow wiped the first bugged bandit camp. Pray they'll do the same in your game.
  • Your allies will push forward, fighting the second bugged camp. They won't make it, but they will keep pushing and respawning from refugees camp (mind though, they'll stop spawning at some point).
  • while second bugged camp is busy fighting your allies, it's time to capture elf monument. Build woodcutter hut, small hq, sawmill and forester - build them in the upper left part of the map, don't waste space around elf monument, you will need every inch of space here. You still might get wiped by bandits, but you have much better chances now - west should be constantly defended by your allies, so for now you have to worry only about east side.
  • you have wood production running, so start building your defenses. Start building towers on the west side, don't cross the river though. Spam towers. You should have at least 3 squads of 3 workers building towers at all times. You have plenty of space around hero monument and elf monument - spam towers all around here.
  • at one point your allies will stop spawning, and bandits from second bugged camp will start flowing - build some towers on the east side to protect your wood gatherers. You need all wood you can get.
  • get your heroes and clear the map of all normal bandit camps - you will need to gather lenya, and it will be easier to move your workers around if there are no additional threats.
  • pro tip - computer cheats, he knows where your units are (at least your workers).
  • take all the workers you can get (around 20 should be enough) and when opportunity comes, move them out from base - go west to the orc camp, which you should've cleared by now. Save some wood. Probably few workres didn't make it, that's ok, that's why we took every worker we could - because they are fragile.
  • from there navigate south, to the lenya located a little bit north from Utran Fortress. Build lenya gatherer hut there and remember, that enemies know you are there. So use wood you saved to build some towers.

And that's it. Now just wait until you get 1000 lenya, and exchange them for Dryad squad. GG. :D

If your hero is not strong enough to take Utran Fortress even by kiting, you can try to get defenses up first, take all your heroes, and hope that enemies won't destroy hero monument before you take the Fortress... You may get wiped, but that's ok, you can reenter the map, retake the monuments and start over - at least you got the Fortress, and hopefully your allies will take the first bugged camp. The rest is the same as written above. And trees grown by forester should still be there, even after wipe, so you have a head start.

Meh. This map is extremely easy.

For the first part, I just built 4 towers at south and placed about 5 archers for defense.
At north I placed 2 towers.

I left the base with avatar imediattely to start hunting down enemy camps. Sent 5 archers to scout him, then some more until reached about 20 - 25, which was enough to completely wipe out anything without any effort.

Kept making more units and placing them at south for tower defense. All enemies where killed before reaching my own units most often. Still with only 4 towers, cause more is cheese.

When all enemy camps where destroyed, but not the bigger one at NE, I just started my all in against it, and I won pretty easily.

Paladins have fire resistance, so I made sure to let them lead the attack against the towers.
Also it seems the towers stop shoting once engaged in melee, which kinda makes it a unbeliavable piece of cake.

btw I won on "hard." meh.

He is not talking about The Shiel, but about the bugged Shiel, after the new patch. That bug creates hundreds of units in spawn camps which don't leave the camp, so it's almost impossible to destroy it.

I've beat it like 1 week ago. When was the last patch?
Dunno how I've played a different version, since it's the same map at fairly recent date with the lastest updates, from automatic steam updates system.

Guarding units can be lured out, AI isn't particular intelligent.

Definitely not. I stand corrected.

It seems the bugged version can be avoided on the beta selection, on the game's proprieties.
The first option, "none." Should be bug free.

Yeah, I just edited my post to make it clear I'm talking about bugged Shiel. :) It was quite challenging. :D

Quick question: I tried this approach, but as soon as the utrans start fighted the bugged bandits, my game lags to a stop and freezes entirely. Did you have this problem?
DevolayS Jun 3, 2018 @ 11:01pm
Fortunatelly no, but it did happen on my first attempt. It was when I tried to just rush to spam towers all over the place, and enemies started to swarm in bigger and bigger waves. They started to come in such large numbers, that the game crashed. Later I had close call 2 times (laggy as hell), so I decided to teleport to another map and to get back there.

Thanks for the reply. I tried clearing the fortress, bindstoning to another map and then back. Go figure, the mob was Gone!. So weird. The Utrans took out the few bandits there. Not sure if this was a fluke, but it could be a temp workaround.

Yeah haha. :D Something very similar happened to me, the very first bugged camp just disappeared at some point, I did not look there at that time so I'm still not sure what happened.

Wow, this bugged version looks awesome with all those enemies. I need to check it out.
