"Failed to initialize Direct X 9 renderer" in Windows 10

Compatability mode doesn't work. Running the Direct X Web installer does not help. Putting the d3d9.dll in the /bin directory does not work. Is there any way to get this game to run w/o downloading some 3rd party option?

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and Painkiller:Black Edition runs without error. I recommend downloading and installing the June 2010 Directx 9 Redistributable[www.microsoft.com] instead of the Direct X web installer.

PS: (For anyone wondering why there is not a mouse icon (has Painkiller: Black Edition), next to name, the game shows as the Painkiller:Gold Edition for me, which is the same thing as Painkiller: Black Edition).

(Actually, I have both Black and Gold editions. Bought one before it was changed into the other, and bought the Painkiller pack after. So it's doubled up on my list.)

*Ahem* Anyway, downloaded, installed, it put some new files on... but it still isn't running. I'll fiddle a bit more, reboot, and try again.

I just got this game yesterday, and it runs on Windows 10 without any additional action on my end. No patch downloads, no file editing, nothing.

Nothing's worked here. At all. Same error message, black and gold versions both.

You could always try uninstalling the game and reinstalling it.
