Unofficial patches?

I've downloaded it now and everything works fine for me, Aside from fixes for the stretched HUD, what other fixes should I use? Unofficial patch 1.66 should be enough?

You can try powermad that also add some commands to have more fun :-)

What is powermad?

Since this will be my first playthrough I'm just looking for bug fixes and the widescreen fix, not any additional gameplay features or mods - I want the vanilla experience but with bugs fixes in case those are necessary.

For that unofficial patch 1.66 should enough?

Have you started playing the game and are already facing problems? I wouldn't trust unofficial patches.
