How to join a friend's server?

When starting a server, how can my friend join. Have tried through ip adresses but can't seem to join that way. Cannot invite to the game through the friends menu either.

That's because Painkiller runs on Gamespy that isn't working anymore.
To fix this there are two ways
1) you get an ip address on the server you want to play to by writing /connect and then the code of ip ( when you are playing singleplayer)
2) Both ( you and your friend) must carefully watch this video:

btw you should both install Painkiller ++ 1.3 for the multiplayer because with that mod you can customize more your game and stuff like that.

I have pk++ installed and can see the servers that are publicly available. These servers are a bit laggy though, is there a way to create a server and have a friend join directly?

you can create your own server with Hamachi, there are many tutorials about that on youtube

Ok so I have hamachi, but whenever i try to join a friends server or they try to join mine it gives the message that there is no response and cannot connect.

Don't need third party software dude. Just read this article here: http://pkzone.org/gamespy-multiplayer-server-down/

Just do the modification to the host file manually (if i'm right there is a bat for this in the article for automatically mod), of course on both pc you need it. With this modification you can see active servers again and play multiplayer normally like before.

edit. about hosting a server, you can do it from multiplayer menu by starting new public game and host it, it's very very very simple.

he has already done that, but he want to play without the lag of those servers
