No, the Steam version is 1.6 - But you can install 1.75 if you'd like. I did that and it works just fine (although some people seem to have problems with it from what i read online.)

How is 1.7 a huge improvement I know nothing about it? Is it much better optimized because I have a six-core amd processor with 4gb ram and a 1GB Radeon Hd5770 video card and it still stutters and freezes up frequently. Also, when I turn the graphics settings all the way up there are weird lines. When I turn it down to medium it looks fine.

I doubt that they'll install 1.75 by default. It isn't an official patch. It was made by the community.

They already have 1.6 community patch installed. Why not updating it to the latest.
1.6 was the last official patch the from developer. Patches 1.70 through 1.75 were the community patches. This game doesn't appear on Steam with the community patches due to a legal issue that Steam have no control over. This same legal issue does not prevent Steam from releasing the Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods expansion pack with the community patch, which is nice at least. Just make sure that if you install 1.75 on Gothic 3 that you tell Steam not to update Gothic 3 or it might revert back to 1.6. Saved games from 1.70 through 1.75 are NOT compatible with the 1.6 version that comes with Steam, so you'd have to patch back to 1.75 to get those saves to work.

Patch 1.6 was a community patch, according the the G3 CP website. The CP makers were hired (or at least commissioned) by JoWood, I believe, so they are still semi-official patches. And that aside, lots of games are including user created content these days, there's really no reason to not include patch 1.75 as the default Steam download version.
I think it has to do with the fact that even though it was commissioned by JoWood and created by CPT, it's still officially supported by JoWood and possibly even licenced under them. So even though CPT created it, it's still officially the last patch JoWood supported. Because the CPT 1.7x isn't officially JoWood product, they may not be able to legally distribute the game with it attached. This may also explain why the CPT choose to have the 1.7x save games work differently than the ones before those patches but I'm not sure.

I'll promote my guide for installing patches and getting the game to run as well as possible:

And yes, you really do want to install the current patch.

So I bought Steam G3 yesterday and played with the 1.6 patch for about 15 minutes (only as far as winning the battle of Ardea) then quit it with mixed emotions of disgust and sadness and thoughts of 1.75 . It kept me wondering all day but the solution is pretty intuitive I must say. Go to your Library and right click Gothic 3, then click Properties. On the right you will see an additional tab that says Betas. Click the down arrow of the betas there and select Cpt 1.75 testbranch, then wait for the update to download, that´s what I´m doing right now. :steamhappy: Will stay in touch and report on how it works. :-p Good hunting! ;-)
