Gothic 1 and 2 have stronger narrative. They are like Witcher in that regard.
Gothic 3 has bigger world with a lot of quests to do in it. It's like Skyrim in that regard.

Choose whichever you prefer. Or start from the beginning - Gothic 1.

Gothic 1 seems the most harsh when compared to the later games (controls are archaic for example) but has arguably the best atmosphere (but you really need to immerse yourself). And well... it's the first one in the series.

Agree with the first two replies. Best to start with the first game because it's pretty fantastic once you figure out the controls.

Im looking for a game like Skyrim. So yeah, i think im going to choose the 3rd one. Is true the game is buggy?

What about the world and quest of Gothic 2? Or is the same thing like The Witcher?

I just remember in Gothic 1 I was running around in the cheapest leather armor for like half the game lol until I finally got something better. I spent the majority of that game running for my life. Gothic 2 I became a mage and it was much better.

Go for Gothic 3 if you prefer the Skyrim approach. It's a good game despite all the flack it gets.

Gothic 1 > 3. I skipped 2 because I hated it.

Gothic 2 is one of the finest RPGs in all gaming history, and probably my favourite RPG following Chrono Trigger.

Still, I would start with Gothic 1, then play 2. But if there is only willingness to play one Gothic game, then I recommend Gothic 2.

agree with most posts, g3 simply to big,and it becomes same over time,g1 and g2 well thats gonna be best true very hard and challenge rpg, with best quests, even better than witcher 3 for next 10 years believe, and new stuff like dx11 on gothic 2 makes game look better than skyrim for me

I finished both 1 and 2 when they released. Gothic 2 was an absolute masterpiece. Gave up on Gothic 3 after few hours cause it was an unplayable bugfest. Might give it a try now with patch and on sale.

It's definitely worth a go when patched.

If your more into open world and a lot of freedom I would go with gothic 3. Although gothic 2 feels more like a hand crafted world and has a better narrative. Gothic 2 is designed more like the witcher 2 and gothic 3 more like skyrim.

You might also like to check out the risen series. Risen 1 is a good mix of open world with gothic style quests and progression. Risen 3 is also pretty cool so I hear.

Gothic 3 is not a masterpiece.
Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 were masterpieces. And the Add-On The Night of Raven was as well.

Gothic 3 is compared to the first and second one really bad, even with the patches.
It's not as bad as Arcania, let's face it, but it just doesn't match up with Gothic 1 and 2.

A sandbox type game like Gothic 3 doesn't lend itself well to a series that's based on a strong narrative and strong characters. You never get really invested in why you are doing what you're doing or what the whole point of the main quest is. You do a bunch of quests benefitting the orcs, who have no problem with you, then turn around and attack their city because that's what you need to do if you're helping the rebels. I finished the game after getting one last mission from one of the gods which was a mundane assassination, and then it was over. The game was epic in scope but the story wasn't epic at all.
