Just let me say this beforehand: the loot in the chests is not even worth the time and effort you spend for it. It always just some random loot like in all the other chests imho. Never found anything good in these chests. The same goes for all the other chests which need thieving. You get the money from the fights and then looting and not from chests. The contents of all the chests is just a drop in the ocean. All thiefing skills and Open Lock Spell is the most worthless thing in the whole game.
So what are the conditions for the most worthless spell of all:
Without Alternative Balancing :
you need 230 Ancient Knowledge, the 5 artifacts have been destroyed, 5 Learning Points, 5000 Gold
20 (or 40) mana for casting (dont remember exactly) and
Teachers: Saturas, Vatras, Riordian, Merdarion and Cronos
With Alternativem Balancing:
you need 200 Ancient Knowledge, Telekinesis, 10 Learning Points, 4000 Gold
180 mana for casting
The main difference is you even cant use the spell scroll in the beginning because you only have 100 mana and the spell costs 180 mana. This also goes for fighters and rangers. So they can never use the Open Lock Scrolls because as a ranger or figher I will never increase my mana. But without AB you can only learn the spell so late its too late. At that point you dont need loot anymore.
But at least without AB you can use the Open Lock Scrolls. While with AB you have to put 20 Learning points into mana just for using 1 scroll. Well at least the AB got rid of the condition that you have to destroy the 5 artifacts first.
Anyway, I kinda agree with Oneeyed, learning the spell is rather pointless. As for the thieving skills, opening difficult locks (the first upgrade) is the only reasonably viable solution to open the metal chests, it doesn't require investing in too much money or LPs.
Impossible chests are too rare and, by the time your character could potentially learn the skills (or the spell) to open them, they are outvalued by the magic and weapon chests you can open without any skill.
Then there is the mana cost in AB that comes into account, as pointed out, making them realistically accessible only to mage type characters. But even here, the number of open lock scrolls you find will always be greater than the impossible chests you come across.
Also, on the same note, what about the Time Bubble? I read it becomes available once you choose the middle path (Xardas/Adanos) does it means I have to destroy the artifacts first? The character in question already has Water Mage perk and is on AB.
Yeah you also have to destroy the 5 artifacts which makes the spell rather stupid because at that point the game is practically over.

The high-level spells in the game become available too late, especially if taking a completionist approach. On the other hand, there are many battles left if not slaying everyone before learning the high-level spells.
Cheeky, one can use Time Bubble after liberating the furnace... That would have been too easy I assume...
this is why I want it, yes. As 1 reply above said, yes the chests are mostly utterly worthless. I'm just the type in these games that I just plain want to open them and have a look anyway. I tend to be a loot hog.
