Then the Community Patch itself. It is more or less an official patch, since JoWood payed for some of those involved making it after Piranha Bytes left to work on Risen. Now that JoWood doesn't exist anymore, Nordic Games owns the rights to the game and they have stickied 1.75 patch in the forums.
I am guessing you downloaded 1.75.14 from World of Gothic[www.worldofgothic.de]? That's the biggest fan site for Gothic, and I've never got any viruses/malware from there. Never download any (un)official patches or mods (.exe, etc.) from sites you don't trust, just in case for the sake of your computer and personal details.
Again, you won't get any bans for installing Community Patch neither do you get any bans from using cheats (marvin mode) since there is nothing to give you a ban for.
I got the patch from World of Gothic and was just worried because of it not being "officially" integrated to Steam :/
Important thing to remember is that if the game has VAC protected multiplayer, you always make sure that the installed mods are valid. I've read stories from people who have messed around in single-player by using trainers and other out of game cheats, then forget they are installed and go play normally in a multiplayer game without any intentions to cheat. VAC ban triggers because of forgotten software despite that you had only used them single-player. Ignorance sometimes have a hefty price to pay, so it's good to ask.
Also good thing to remember is that if someone gets a VAC ban, it only affects that one single game and only on VAC servers (ban on Counter-Strike will not affect Counter-Strike: Source, for example). You can still play that game online if you can find non-VAC servers. Game ban on the other hand is a bit different since the developer can ban you completely from the multiplayer, but you still can play single-player.
In no way am I endorsing the usage of .exe / .dll files even for mods, as these can/will cause problems and may trigger VAC. Always make sure you know exactly what patch/mod you are installing and that the files are 120% safe!
As for the Community Patch which is Steam integrated, I recommend checking here. Some say it works, some say they are having problems but it's worth a try anyway!
Normally I am perfectly fine with the patches that Steam offers but in case of Gothic 3 I still had a savegame from a non Steam version (bought the Complete Pack for nostalgia haha) and I'd love to use this one instead of starting a new game, but read that the savegames aren't compatible with the different patchs.
Thats why I would love to use the CP 1.75.14 again but well, wasnt sure about VAC and stuff. But since its a singleplayer only game there's nothing for VAC to search or call a ban on, like you said. Maybe this thread helps other people with similar problems or worries haha :)
I am still going to try this beta patch with my old savegame, maybe it works :)
