Within Gothic 3, since the game implements a true seamless open world, there is more than one way how to play the game. There are multiple paths and multiple endings. Looking into the main quests early, you meet story NPCs that aid the story-telling since they tell about Xardas and what has happened lately.

Thanks, king.
During the saga, there is a war between orcs and humans. The biggest reason the humans were capable of surviving was because they were using some minerals that were extracted by prisoners in a particular island. The problem was that the kingdom tried to protect the prison so that way nobody could escape. Problem was that who entered the prison would not be able to escape. In the end the king lost control of the prison and to get those minerals he had to negotiate with the prisoners.
Gothic 1
One day The nameless hero ended up in this prison. By the fact that the nameless hero wanted to get out of that prison, he met several characters that helped him to accomplish this. Xardas, Diego, etc.
Gothic 2
After an epic victory, everyone was able to leave or enter freely the prison. However he was the only one left behind but Xardas rescued him so that way he could defeat a new enemy that appeared in the island. Problem was not only this new enemy, the humans started to lose control of the mine against the orcs.
Gothic 3
After winning against the new enemy, the nameless hero and his pals left the island. Problem was that... Gothic 3.
Basically you are going to fin several characters from the previous games.
Gothic 1 is more like an introduction of the world, the Nameless hero and most of the main characteres.
Gothic 2 is more like an introduction of what happen in Gothic 3.
And Gothic 3 is mostly about seeing what the ♥♥♥♥ happened during the war between the orcs and the humans.
Always remember the Nameless Hero is like a tsunami that changes the course of history.
Gothic 3 is a fantastic game, every city is unique.
