In short - don't let animals near you. They're vicious, once they get to you, you're locked and doomed.

With wolfes you want to start hitting them before they even see you and you do not let them bite you by hitting them all the time. With lurkers you used RMB to hit them because it keeps them further away from you, but with wolfes this does not work. They're too fast.

Honestly - yes. Using a bow or a crossbow to injure or, if you have the skill enough, kill them is a smart technique.

I think i have a better solution. For wild animals on the whole use long weapons. Those being the spear and halberd. The spear doesnt require large weapons skill unlike the halberd so its great at the start. You can get it from the trader Mario(i think that was his name) in Reddock. The other large weapons like two hander and axes arent very effective and im against using them vs large groups of wild animals, because theyre a lot shorter than the spear and halberd. For opponents like humans orcs - sword and shield is best for me. For ogres use the long weapon as well. Bows and spells are good to be used when theres still a significant distance between you and your opponent. When he comes too close take out your melee weapon.

Personally, my weapon of choice is a good sword. Yes, a spear is perfect for keeping enemies further from you, but large weapons require a different technique and to me don't look as good as one handed swords, but that's just me.
As for magic, it's perfect for killing from a distace if you've invested enough in it. Fireball can make huge impact if you use it right, but be warned that you can become over powered and killing will become less interesting.

Timing is important in this game. If you're too late on your attack, you'll be hit. If you time your attack correctly, you can stop the animal's attack.

Spears and large weapons must be used correctly. They're tall and heavy, so you're slow with them. That's why you must start swinging your weapon much sooner than it's with small weapons. It will take some time to get the gang of it.
My advice - use a bow, but be quick. If you fire once, the animal will race towards you. usually you can hit it atleast twice, if you're lucky, you can kill it this way without even drawing your sword.
To kill wolves with a sword, you must be strong and quick. Until you get strong enough and skilled enough, keep your distance. Kill them one by one. To do this lure them out and don't start a fight untill you're far away from other wolves.

Also, before you start killing animals, have you learned how to skinn them? Ideally you'd know how to skinn and declaw them. This will help you to earn more gold.

The reason for using the two handed weapons is that they keep the animals and other beasts at bay.The spear and halberd have a long enough range so that you can hit the ogres and wolves/jackals/ripperbeasts/whatever without being in danger of them hitting you or your attack missing due to them jumping back.Ogres are extremely tough to fight with swords especially on hard difficulty and if youve installed the latest Community patch its almost absurd.Tha patch makes the game a lot more different so i suggest you take a look at it on the World of Gothic website. And never have i actually gotten to the level where magic one shots enemies until i reach the endgame where i have either meteor or i have the strong lightning which is understandable, because Chosen of Innos/Beliar.

You might wan'tto check if Alternate AI is active in your game. You can see it in the difficulty settings. Alternate AI makes combat harder.

Did you tried using 2 swords at the same time? That was my 1st choice after look at the "ablilities". I would like to know if its worth going in that path.

I do have it on.Combat otherwise is basically mash attack. Its still sort of mash attack, but you need to have a more strategic aproach towards most enemies.
