When you start the game you have to liberate the starting town, it's normal that the orcs there will attack you.

If you mean after that: There are just a few orcs you can attack in the wilderness without trouble. All other orcs are part of a city, and for every city there is a counter how much orcs you can kill before the whole town go against you.

Towns have rules - no fighting. If you start to make trouble, the guards will atttack you and if you kill someone, everyone who saw you will attack you, unless a lot of NPC's saw you, in that case the whole town will kick your but. :D

Here's some tips:
+ You can beat up who ever you want (assuming you are skilled enough) and you can kill who ever you want, but no one likes being beaten up, so they will be angry with you, but they won't do anything about it, because if you could kick their ass once, you'll do it again :D

+ No one likes murderers except if you're killing their enemies. If you have to assasinate someone in town, you don't just go straight to him and start waving your weapon, the rest of the citizens will kill you. You lure them out of town and then kill them. For most of such cases, there's a quest that helps to lore the NPC out. If not, just pull out your weapon and wait till he/she runs towards you and you run away until you're out of town.

+ If you start a fight in a town that doesn't know you and isn't friendly (75+ reputation with town (green collored names)), others will kick your ♥♥♥ (unless you can kick all of their ases :D ). Towns have rules - no fighting (unless you are well known :D)

+ After you've beaten up someone and knocked them down, you can take their weapon and rob them.

+ If you steal something in a town people will start to suspect you, You can try to talk your way out, but they might or might not fall for that. IF they see you stealing, be prepared to fight.

+ If someone sees you killing someone in a town - be prepared to fight. If only one person saw you, you can kill him and get away with it, though others might suspect you're to blame, but just as with stealing, you can try to talk your way out of it. If a lot of people saw you, then you'll have to fight all the people in town.

+ Friends (NPC's with green name) will join your fights and will support you. If you fight a friend, however, others will cheer. :D

Turn off "Alternative Balancing" since it is meant for players who already know how the enemy attacks.

Or... turn on god mode. :/

"Alternate Balancing" has nothing to do with attacks, you meant "Alternate AI". "Alternate Balancing" changed rates for skills and their demands and implemented skill dependencies, where you need to know one skill to learn another. "Alternate AI" changed fight mechanics and made it harder.
Both of these, however, are meant to make the game harder.
"Alternate Balancing" can be turned off in the main menu, while "Alternate AI" must be turned off in the dificulty setings.

God Mode should be last resort, since it will spoil your gameplay.

Welcom to gothic 3, this game does not hold your hand in any way. But that is what makes it great. But yeah, the first battle is a little bit of being thrown in on the deep end if you have alternative balancing enabled. Or for that matter if you are used to playing all the "hard" RPGs where you can never be seriously hurt by an AI enemy.

A fact worth mentioning - you can not die during the first battle.

You can't die, but you can be knocked out over and over again.

Yes, so it's not as bad as just throwing you in and watching if you'll survive.

You are assuming that the average person has enough of an attention span to continue playing after having their ass handed to them. Most old guys like us will try again, many others will just whine the game is too hard or broken and get a refund.

Consider the fact that fans of the serries are always complaining that the game is too easy, that's why the comunity patches include Alternate Balancing and Alternate AI, to make it harder.
Some games are just meant to be played a certain way. Would you complain that a puzzle game is too much of a puzzle? Or would you complain that a shooter has too much shooting?
