As for myself, I have played I think all of the patch versions :D I have felt the original and now I'm the mood for some "improvements" or changes. So I have installed a ton of mods along with the latest patch.
Also it is worth mentioning that the latest patch does have some bugfixes and is known to improve some performance issues on newer systems.
Why? Some gamers care to see the original first hand. And some gamers don't like change for the sake of change. The patches have not only fixed bugs, but also have changed the game in ways some find disturbing, so they prefer to play the version that is the most stable and the least changed - that is v1.6.
The colors changed, like someone made them more sharp and increased the contrast and saturation. wtf
Also 1.6 Giga patch to a 3.6 Giga game! Only the additional languages are a good feature.
Yes, who the ♥♥♥♥ had this idea!
Why everyone is talking about bugs, as I said I installed the game from a cd before buying it for the third time in Steam and it was ok. Here in Steam I noticed the Hero wouldn't stand up immediately if knocked down but I haven't played much.
Alternative balancing is when your opponents are about the same level as you? That sucks too if that is the case.
Alternate Balancing changes how many Learning points some skills require to learn them. Also it Introduced skill hierarchy.
As for bugs, what patch version does that CD have?
It is 3.07 Giga as here on Steam. No patch.
I never had a problem with Gothic 3, only with Gothic 1 which had some windows crushing bugs.
Gothic 3 run ok since it was released.
No. the story is much more complicated than that. It is community, but with the help of the developers and the original code. More info here: http://www.g3cpt.eu/team
As for the red screen while HP is low, many games have that, that's why I joked that developers must think we like it.
As for your CD, it doesn't matter how much HDD space it takes, it's irrelevant. The patch might be over 1 GB, but it doesn't mean that the game will gain 1 GB. I have installed the CP v1.75, it's update, QuestPaccket, with it's update and ContentMod, but my game is only 3.9 GB. It's just 0.2 GB more than yours, despite the patch being that huge.
And Steam default install has Community patch v1.6. It's not the same version that was released almost 10 years ago, but already with fixes included. The base game itself was left by the developers in version 1.12 due to arguments between the publisher YooWood and the developer Piranha Bytes and the Comunity Patch Team pick it up from there to fix problems.
Granted, they did a lot more. Not only bugs and technical issues were fixed, but there have been attempts to "fix" the game itself, by changing some ways the game is played. It's been a while since I've played the previous versions, so I can't point out the changes, but the most obvious are Alternate Balance and Alternate AI.
Thanks for the link. I still can't understand what were those bugs people got frustrated with. The "Where is the Guru ... ?" error I don't get, there wasn't any Guru originally, right?
Anyway what is your suggestion about the patches and mods?
Everything there is explained, but in german :D I just remembered that some spells didn't even work back then. And there was a mysterious perk that was shown with the others and was supposed to allow the hero to swing his weapon while jumping or something like that but it did not work and later was simply removed, because it was never finnished.
My advise on patches and mods would be to try it both ways. Try the game without them and then try with them and you'll see what you like and you'll have experienced the difference yourself and you'll never have to wonder. I have played the game with different patch versions and without mods and I have played with mods. Right now I installed it all just to see how the game has been changed and to experience my favourite game in a bit different way than before.
To get some sense about what was being fixed. It appears to be the full changelog of the CP from the first change ever made to the last change in patch 1.73.
