So stick to Gothic 3 with the Community Patch (check the pinned thread in the Gothic 3 forum for instructions on how to install it) and forget 'G3 Forsaken Gods' ever existed.
Forsaken Gods was made by some indian company which totally messed things up. I would not advise you to waste your time with it.
Without Alternative AI, opponents would sometimes retreat for a long distance for no reason (AI bug). They'd keep facing you and they'd keep you in combat mode until you chased the target and finished him off. This got tedious. Also, sometimes an opponent even retreated into a wall, keeping you locked in combat without being able to get to him. One time, I had a bugged quest because of this.
Also, when fighting with a shield, the whole blocking system is a lot better with Alternative AI because it requires timing blocks a bit, both for you and your opponents, making sword-and-board combat a lot more interesting.
Lastly, depending on the difficulty you choose, more than one opponent may attack you at the same time. When fighting two people without Alternative AI, it's a bit silly that one of them just stands there, waiting until his companion is dead to actually attack you. But the number of opponents who attack you at the same time is still limited (depending on difficulty mode) so it's not like you get attacked by 5 opponents at the same time when attacking a large bandit camp or liberating a town. All in all, it's also more realistic so more immersive. And it makes combat more challenging.
It's important to note that Alternative AI can be switched off at any time, so I see no reason not to try it. If you don't like it, simply disable it.
I play as a mage, so I use magic to bring down the big guys or group of enemies, but I use my staff to dispose of the smaller ones. I went against a rippebeast with Alternative AI and it was kinda an impossible feat for me. It simply didn't react to my swings (as you said, no stun), and it charged me continuously. It became a DPS race which the beast won, so I decided to disable this feature. It may be beneficial for fighting humanoids, but breaks fighting animals even more than the original (if that's possible).
Obviously I'm speaking about melee, for magic and ranged they're going down just as easy, so I feel this tweak makes the gap between melee and magic/ranged even wider than it was before.
