Gothic 3

Gothic 3

Combat in this game is a joke
50% of my swings miss, the hit detection is horrific. Seriously, even with the patches.

You dumb? You know you can lock your target? Default R

I personally use a 2her and a bow when I did my two melee playthroughs. I enjoyed the Pike style weapons most due to the extended range. It's incredibly easy to hit multiple targets with the frontal cone the pike creates.

I agree. The player can just spam the left mouse button.

Worst part of it is the clowns who defend clearly broken and unfinished combat mechanics as 'challenging'.

Yeah I guess it is challenging, but for all the wrong reasons. Resorting to exploits like kiting in order to get through it isn't great either.

I don't know what happened at Piranha Bytes, they had clunky but coherent combat and a great formula in the first two games, then it's been a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ever since, with the exception of Risen 1 I guess which copied G1 and G2.

I haven't played Elex, but hopefully they've realised after a good decade or so that they just don't have the talent to make a fluent combat system, and just go back to a clunky one that actually works and is still satisfying. Then concentrate on their strengths.
I started gothic 3 with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of mods and patches recently, and it damn rocks. The combat is fixed.

Could you please list those mods here? I was 60h in and I need to start again :/

Basically it is community patch with fan update and alternative AI (don't confuse with alternative balance)

Alternative AI requires familiarity with the mechanics, I couldn't get through the opening orc fight with it on due to whatever was going on with it.

Then I got genked by a pack of wolves, dunno if they fixed them, everyone still says they suck.

Still terrible finicky combat no matter which you cut it, guess that's why so many people say go mage and forget about it.

lol this is a joke... swing miss is what you get by brainlessly clicking away with no strategy like a common casual gamer from 21st century...
If you were born in the 80s, you would have no issues with the combat system which is designed to gamers from a time in which we were all good at video games.

Spoiler alert.. you are not supposed to fight a pack of wolves.
Skyrim and other modern RPG with pointless leveling system messed people up. Gothic has a much more realistic feel to it than the likes of Witcher, Fallout and Elder Scroll... like in real life, you face a pack of wolves with a sword you will get mauled no matter how good a fighter you are.

First mistake people do in Gothic is to think they are an invincible hero and they go out fighting any creature they see.. animals in Gothic will rape you in a second... You need a lot of leveling up and hunting skills to properly fight animals.

I played Gothic I & II and when i came to play 3, i found that combat system was very hard and unbalanced. A lot more different if i may say than previous 2 titles. Point is it has nothing to do with new players in Gothic, everyone will find it hard and unbalanced when start to play for first time ( melee combat i am talking about, range & magic are waaaaaaay more better ).

I think Gothic 1 was the most akward melee combat system ever... Gothic 2 was a huge improvement but I think Gothic 3 has the most organic and fluid of the 3. The struggle people has is that i's physic based... so blocking and dodging is a bit unreliable but when you master it, it's pretty functional. I see people playing this game on Youtube and complaining how hard it is, but most of them are trying to just smash clicking mouse button in hope it will work and get furious for it not working well, especially against animals.

Well, yea. Gothic I had very difficult combat for newcomers mostly because there was no mouse input for attack and because you had to combine buttons on keyboard for simple attack, but other than that it was simple, assuming that you actually dodge some attacks from enemies. Patterns for animal attacks in G1 & G2 were simple and you could learn them quickly so you didn't have a lot problems.

I agree completly that when you master it, it's functional. But, we have to admit that UNTIL you master it, either you will delete game from frustration, continue to play with headache or switch to some range character.

I'm coming to Gothic 3 recently, after more than 2,000 hours in Skyrim, which I consider the greatest game of all time. But Gothic 3 is very interesting and has many things which would require a mod in Skyrim.

As for the combat, I'm learning. But people also complain about Skyrim's combat. I suspect that in both games, the players who complain the most just are not any good. I'll have to see for myself.

Edit: I've noticed that when swinging at opponents, opponents seem to back-peddle. Smart thing to do! Is this what is meant by 50% miss? Have to outsmart them.
