Yeah I guess it is challenging, but for all the wrong reasons. Resorting to exploits like kiting in order to get through it isn't great either.
I don't know what happened at Piranha Bytes, they had clunky but coherent combat and a great formula in the first two games, then it's been a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ever since, with the exception of Risen 1 I guess which copied G1 and G2.
I haven't played Elex, but hopefully they've realised after a good decade or so that they just don't have the talent to make a fluent combat system, and just go back to a clunky one that actually works and is still satisfying. Then concentrate on their strengths.
Could you please list those mods here? I was 60h in and I need to start again :/
Then I got genked by a pack of wolves, dunno if they fixed them, everyone still says they suck.
Still terrible finicky combat no matter which you cut it, guess that's why so many people say go mage and forget about it.
If you were born in the 80s, you would have no issues with the combat system which is designed to gamers from a time in which we were all good at video games.
Skyrim and other modern RPG with pointless leveling system messed people up. Gothic has a much more realistic feel to it than the likes of Witcher, Fallout and Elder Scroll... like in real life, you face a pack of wolves with a sword you will get mauled no matter how good a fighter you are.
First mistake people do in Gothic is to think they are an invincible hero and they go out fighting any creature they see.. animals in Gothic will rape you in a second... You need a lot of leveling up and hunting skills to properly fight animals.
I played Gothic I & II and when i came to play 3, i found that combat system was very hard and unbalanced. A lot more different if i may say than previous 2 titles. Point is it has nothing to do with new players in Gothic, everyone will find it hard and unbalanced when start to play for first time ( melee combat i am talking about, range & magic are waaaaaaay more better ).
I agree completly that when you master it, it's functional. But, we have to admit that UNTIL you master it, either you will delete game from frustration, continue to play with headache or switch to some range character.
As for the combat, I'm learning. But people also complain about Skyrim's combat. I suspect that in both games, the players who complain the most just are not any good. I'll have to see for myself.
Edit: I've noticed that when swinging at opponents, opponents seem to back-peddle. Smart thing to do! Is this what is meant by 50% miss? Have to outsmart them.
