NPCs get hostile?
Hello,

Just started playing today.

In the rebel camp I tried to open the chest in the Alchemist's chamber (Sebastian) and everyone around attacked me. I didn't get a shot at taking the contents of the chest.

Are they friendly again after a day or something? I have a quest with Sebastian, will I be able to complete it?

If they have white color names they are neutral, orange color names are agitated ones they will watch you, red color will kill you and green color are your friends. As far as I can remember they stay orange after you steal in front of them go to the leader of the camp and try to talk to him if they dont talk with you.
Especially chests and other locked containers are for thieves. Don't open them. You are not permitted to take a look at Sebastian's property.

Even if you take things while not being seen, orc guards will talk to you a bit later, inform you about missing stuff and warn you that they will be watching you.

Thanks guys/gals.

I went back to the starting village and slept, back to rebel camp no one attacked me, but all the names are orange. How to know if the chest is locked? The colour of the word "Chest? White is unlocked, orange is locked and red can't be picked or is really hard?

Every chest can be picked. Some chest require higher perks in lockpicking.

And another thing. When in a melee fight involving several of you [ say, you and rebs vs. wild boars or ripperbeasts ], the focus must be kept on the orange/red enemy with its name visible. If not, you will easily and accidentally strike one of your NPC mates, who will immediately go orange and go after you as well. This one alone will attack, thus once you beat him down, only this person will bear a grudge, which otherwise, does not usually impact either quests, or the story line.

you can steal from chests or visible items, but you need to sneak. if anyone is nearby they will tell you to stop sneaking. this is often easier at night. generally you don't want to steal much from a town unless it is weapons (for money) or mission related. too much and a town goes hostile then permanently hostile. you get everything anyway if you liberate the town. This is despite the "talk your way out" perk. so if you have to steal then see if you get questioned. if yes then load a save. save the stealing for missions.

If I am going the Rebel route, I wait until I have completed all of my missions for the Orcs/ Mercs in any town or castle when everyone goes Green. Then I sneak around during the afternoon when everyone is out on the streets and steal everyone blind, jumping over side stairway railings and the like to prevent being confronted more than once. I can avoid confrontation altogether by either transporting out of the town, or turning into a Bloodfly and flying over the walls. Usually though, at some point, you will have to cross paths with a looted town again for such things as supplies even before liberation and I just go through the '' Wait! Alot of valuable things have been stolen. Do YOU know anything about it''?

After the ''No'!', followed by the ''We're watching you'' ,which was bought by the earlier ''talk your way out'' perk, I can head in without any worries, knowing that I heisted them earlier anyway. If your numbers are high enough in the town, you can actually go through two sets of warnings, the final being ''if more things disappear, we will hold you responsible'', before they go Orange and you get the boot if you fail to heed the final warning.
It is important that you ensure nothing was overlooked or you will have to wait until liberation to get what were valuable items which would have served you well during the journeys earlier going, such as a excellent helmet and bow [ let alone another fire chalice ] in Geldern or the alchemists loot in Cape Dun.
