Purified
Mana regeneration:

Mana 100 : +1 per second
Mana 200 : +2/s
Mana 300 : +3/s
Mana 400 : +4/s
...
Mana 800 : +5/s

Probably it's capped at 5/s for 500 Mana already.

Nice
Does it makes sense to start with the mage save from nexus? Or is it not necessary?
Well, I don't know that "mage save" to comment on it.

There are many ways how to become a magician. If you rest often, a mage that increases mana before learning mana regeneration can be more efficient. Mana regeneration gets more interesting at 200,300,400,500 and higher values due to increase recovery speed.

There are also different paths through the game, and retrieving the artefacts of Adanos and the 12 fire chalices before turning against any of the factions means that you will be able to learn the high level spells before most of the large battles.

Read up on how the CPT's "Alternative Balancing" mode changes the game, then decide on AB ON or OFF. That separate PDF manual is linked within the Ultimate Gothic 3 guide.

With AB OFF, the hero can become more of a jack of all trades due to the default cost of stats/skills, higher bonus options (from stone tablets and also from the chosen god's bonuses).

With AB ON, you need to specialize a lot more. To become a magician, it is recommended that you invest into Ancient Knowledge (AK) early to get a first projectile spell. Preferably Ice Lance from Porgan. With smart playing, you can learn such a spell (Fireball, Ice Lance or Lighting Bolt) at level 8, but you will quickly run out of mana. Depending on how much you explore to reach all the cities and camps, you can do many quests without fighting. Where you want to fight, prefer a bow. Strictly investing into Fast Learning and AK, it is possible to learn mana regeneration around level 23. Earlier if you waste permanent bonuses from stone tablets and bookshelves. With AB ON, one should save all AK bonuses till AK has reached 250. Then the cost per AK point doubles, and the bonus options become more attractive.

With high meta-gaming, one can create a glass cannon - but a few points spent on health, strength, hunting can be helpful early on - or else you will need to search for bonuses.

I never really played the game before due to godawful animations and stupid melee combat, but jea with this magebuild it might be fun

Oh, that mod reduces STR to 0 and Hunting to 0 (author calls it DEX) - which is a hefty penalty. My rationale is: Arena fighting leads to large reputation increase in towns, and reputation with towns is essential, if you want to access upper quarters and/or talk to leaders. 75% reputation in a town is the minimum. In the default game (or with AB ON), a magician can win arena fights without investing into STR, and each won fight results in XP, STR +1 and reputation increase. Buying some more STR points and consuming dragonroots, a magician can wield swords that are good enough to win arena fights.

That said, I would advise against using that mod. The game can be played in multiple ways, but playing smart and infiltrating the factions before choosing sides is the more entertaining way.

Edit: Both STR/Hunting at 0 would mean that you cannot wield any melee/ranged weapon, and you would likely want to use a bow as backup weapon, since +1/sec mana regeneration for Mana 100 isn't much, and even if starting with Ice Lance, you would run a lot.

Alright thanks again :)
Fire Rain in ELEX II is extremely similar with regard to how it works, but it looks more like meteors. There's also Fire Wave, but I have used it rarely so far. And Fireball (aka Flaming Bow), which isn't a seeking missile, but good enough to eliminate things before they get close. What's missing though, is mana regeneration.
