What youre doing during combat is about as good as it gets for melee in the 3rd installment here unfortunately, the only other way to play a melee build is to click as fast as you can and hope for luck (quick save a lot using this method).
Having played through it many times (It is a fantastic game still with some of the best video game music and questing despite how the combat falls horribly short) I can say magic is the best way to go- fireballs specifically. My favorite move is to cast bloodlust on one person in a group then run in and spam cast fire rain (theyre distracted by the bloodlust brawler you see) and just run off and watch as you rake in exp across the screen.
Melee is finding the longest weapon with the fastest quick attack animation and spamming it...
Once you get decent armor (won't happen until later in the game) then you don't need to run around so much. As a note, light armor is better than heavy armor.
(the bonus for the armor skills apply to rings/amulets/staves/shields, and 100% light > 25% heavy - you can get the ancient knowledge without spending any points, so don't worry about that.)
Once you get mana regen then magic is like cheating (it makes the game so easy).
With all the stone tablets and such lying around it is possible to get >500 ancient knowledge without spending any points...
(May require save/loading before talking to the 14 artifact merchants until they have 3-4 tablets each if you want 500+ free points though, that can take a while.)
