Story summary?
I just beat the game, and loved it, but I didn't really get the whole story. Can someone give me a quick description of the events that I just played? I would greatly appreciate it :)

Hm. As far as I can tell, you're the assigned executioner of a sort of immortal/force of nature which has recently moved into town. Perhaps the Fire had been neglecting its duties for too long, or its minions simply were stretched too thin. In any case, the various strata of undead were getting too rampant for the Fire to ignore, growing in size and number, and you're there to help out. Throughout the game you get a sense of the sort of desperation to all of this.

That's..not really what happens in the game at all. Maybe beforehand, but they meant what actually happens story-wise throughout the events of the game.

Yeah, I get the premise of the game, but I'm not sure about the whole huge portal and everything. I guess that the dust and the bodies are some sort of fuel or building material for the portal, but why did they want to go to candle world? They were all slaughtered anyway. Also, this is a spoiler discussion so don't say "say spoiler first"

I've tried to reference everywhere I can but I don't claim it all to be fact, this is just what I think happened so take it with a grain of salt.

Izban wanted to go there to see the fireplace, he describes it as his "friend". Skeleton tape #1 in particular seems to imply that Izban decieved the others by telling them it was a place they would be embraced by someone's warmth for he loves every one of them. I say decieved because Skeleton tape 3 hints that Izban used to be a reaper, so he would know full well that the fireplace hates undead.

There's also a lot to suggest that the meat/flesh is necessary, how the ash is necessary I'm not sure but since the tapes seem to suggest it brings back some warmth, so... entirely speculating here but I imagine it's some sort of pseudo-life giving drug/fuel, combine that with a buttload of dead bodies... it's vague... but yeah.

The secret hard mode tape I can only assume is Izban when he was a reaper and it makes it pretty obvious that all he lived for was his missions and the fireplace. He would just sit around staring at the mould on his ceiling, waiting for the fireplace to light up. Then back to Skeleton tape 3, which I imagine is the first time he enters his house after he presumably killed himself (since that's how skeletons are formed) where he's feeling the horrific cold of being undead and he's beyond desperate to speak to his "friend" the fireplace, so desperate he's clawing away at the damn wall to reach it. That's his motivation for the portal.

What he actually wants to do is again, speculation, maybe he honestly just wanted to talk. Maybe he wanted to beg to become a reaper again, maybe he was attempting to kill the fireplace for abandoning him, who knows.... the devs do.

Soshidow, that's probably the best and most accurate summary of the story possible. Nice.

In a lot of ways I feel bad for Ibzan. He hates his job of misery, so at some point he gives it up, whether by committing suicide or simply breaking the 'rules'. He finally finds a few people, the undead, that actually trust him and listen to him. He uses that trust to get to the candle again. Whether it's to apologize or to get revenge... at least he finally has a purpose beyond 'kill undead'. It's pretty tragic.

Thank you. It all makes sense now.... I feel bad about Izban though.

What 'rules' are we talking about? As far as I know, the reapers must obey the Fireplace, something I doubt Ibzan failed to do. They must also kill all undead in an area when instructed, though a few leftover targets are forgivable when there's a bigger fish in the pond. If Ibzan commited suicide, that totally nulifies the "reapers are impervious to damage" theory from another thread, which is pretty cool.

I think I'm a bit late to the party, but after playing the game (and searching the web for the 11th cassette), I came to a conclusion similar to Soshido.

I don't have any idea how Izban transformed from reaper to skeleton, I don't think it was suicide though. Going off the horns and the ability to teleport, he might even be something else altogether (pure conjecture, of course). Another thing about him is that he doesn't seem to want to harm the fire, even when he's the final area (the one where you meet "The God Of Life"), He still says "I only want to talk". I believe he expresses a personal hatred for the reaper because he feels jealous of, maybe even "replaced", the reaper, and if he kills him, he might be able to take his "rightful place" as a reaper once again. When I reference The God Of Life, I mean the fire: same person, two names.

Keep in mind that this is pure conjecture so take my opinion with a grain of salt (a common saying in this forum). It's hard now days to find a game with a good story, but the developers made a book from this gold, I'd sure as hell buy it.

Most skeletons can teleport.

Ibzan has horns, right? So do generals. Maybe he's a cross between a grunt and a general. It would explain his repeated resurrections.
