IMO sparring daily with Roy to gain 2 skill points, on top of the 3/day from the trainer, was better for me than pushing too hard to increase stats by using the Love. I spent a good month or month and a half chilling, doing the minimum in gym to maintain my mediocre stats, but racking up the average 6 skill points/day from the trainer + Roy + going to the bar with Roy. On top of the skill points from fights even if you lose, that's a new skill or perk every 3.5 days or so, you can really shoot through the skill tree.

Yeah it's not the way to do a speed run, but I liked having lots of different attacks or modifiers to pick from and experiment with. It's also fairly relaxing, leave your main stat at the level it's supported by the "won't drop below X" skill, go to the gym once every 2-3 days just to maintain the secondary stat, the 3rd stat you can usually leave at 1. Yeah you spend about the same effort working on his stupid car, but there's not that feeling of constantly fighting the daily stat drain (plenty of time for that later, heh).

Oh and the secret for doing trainer/Roy daily is that it has to be 24 hours since you used him last, if you're even 10 minutes early you get the "it's too soon" message. So for max efficiency work out a routine gets you back to each one right at the 24 hour mark or as soon after as possible
I am not sure if it is actually possible to lock your game if you are savvy enough to last-resort ways to shamelessly pursue a meal.

1. Your first amateur league fight is against Song Mo, who you will probably defeat if you raise any of your stats to 2. Your beginning-of-game free buff, starter attack (and hopefully defense skill) and a primary stat of at least 2 should give you the edge on Song Mo, who is engineered to lose to just about anybody.

2. If you lose your second and/or third fight, your rank will suffer and you'll probably get another shot at Song Mo. If you get bad (or good) dice rolls, you may even get him twice before your rank rises high enough that you only get offered tougher opponents.

3. You don't need any money to join the amateur league, just to visit Frank and then Silver at least once, which you can do on foot for free while hungry.

4. Silver will feed you a few free meals if you are starving, broke and the fridge is empty. If those conditions are not all met, you can empty your money into the fridge, empty your fridge into your belly, then empty your energy into a job to escape poverty or into the gym to make yourself broke enough for a free meal. Not worth it, but the point is that SIlver unlocks immediately and offers a few free meals to get you started. If for some reason you desperately need the free meal, then you can empty your funds/fridge in order to access it. This comes in handy if you ran out of energy or happiness before putting in enough time at your job to get paid money you needed for groceries. You come up short, he feeds you, you finish your shift, get paid, buy more food, keep working until you get your money troubles sorted out. The game is way easier if you have money in order.

5. Once you win a couple of amateur league fights, Roy will introduce himself and seek to befriend you. Perhaps you can lock the game by declining this invitation, although I don't consider the game locked if you can walk around on foot to pass the time while you lose amateur league fights until you get matched with Song Mo and otherwise unlock the bar. Winning an amatuer league fight will pay out a tiny bit of cash which you can spend on meat so you can work at you rjob for money. Winning any fight boosts your morale, which gives your character what he needs to tolerate his day job so you can fill up the fridge. TL,DR: THe game is not locked if you can walk around and lose amateur league fights, and eventually winning any will unlock the bar, which is relevant to the problem of poverty in Punch Club.

6. If you accepted Roy's invitation to drink, the bar has a series of easy opponents who can be fought for early skill points and side quest advancement. By itself this will not help with your money/food problems, but the trash cans, which are easily missed but clickable, generate free food periodically. You can only take one, they don't stack, and they don't regenerate immediately, but you can dumpster dive for free food. Generally speaking, I recommend taking one as soon as you can but never ever eating it unless you're desperate. Dumpster burgers hurt your health, which makes them bad for when you have a fight coming up, and also harm your happiness, meaning they will make your training less effective. On a speedrun, you will probably get fed by Silver at least once, so if you avoid taking a dumpster burger you can eat with him without having to eat your poisoned food. Once the bar is unlocked, the game is not really lockable because you can always eat a dumpster burger, then go to work and earn money for more food.

7. Once you have literally any food money at all, preferably on Days 1/2 of the game and not while dealing with money problems later, make sure to buy some pizzas specifically. This will trigger the grocery owner to tell you about the pizza restaurant, where you can get a more resource efficient job than your starter job.

8. Once you've won just a few more amateur league fights, Roy will start introducing himself to you socially as a friend. This will get you invited to his home, and Roy will heal all of your bars (health, food, energy, AND morale) at a cost of nothing except time. This benefit will not be available for the whole game, but if you are delivering pizzas and you run out of food OR morale, you can chill with Roy for as long as you need until you have enough of either to get paid.

9. In the late game, you will not be able to chill with Roy but you will have either a personal trainer or a loyal gang who will contribute food to your refrigerator for free, other than the types you can buy. This is IN ADDITION to still being able to dive for dumpster burgers.

10. In summary, you can get free food:
-From Silver, beginning of game but only three or so times,
-From the bar dumpster, from early on and only occasionally and at dire cost to your health - this one is more of a desperation strategy, but usable through almost the whole game,
-From Roy, by drinking beer with him in his front yard, and
-From your end game allies, who can produce passive income if you buy expensive upgrades, but will automatically give you some endgame foods.

The game's midgame involves a change of setting. Depending on your character choices, this can be in two different alternate settings. Regardless of which one you get, food and gym access are both free in each location, and in fact you care cut off from doing most types of business that involve money in any way. You just eat and sleep and train until you win enough fights to progress the story. You'll get a few skill points even for your losses, and lengthening your stay will give you a LOT of time to grind, eventually giving you super stats that might compensate if your skills needed work. In short, you can't run out of food in the midgame because you can just eat what's in the fridge and then sleep until it regenerates. It might be possible to lock the game here by eating everything in the refrigerator and then sleeping until you starve, but that would be hard to do by accident, and training will refill the refrigerator by advancing the clock.

If you can get fed by Silver or eat a dumpster burger an spend this energy delivering pizzas for the restaurant, you should be able to escape poverty if you spend most of your money on pizza and meat and don't spend money on buses or gym fees at first - just do push-ups at home when you're stopping by to eat or sleep, and keep delivering pizzas until you have several pizzas and meats in your fridge. That should let you spend time in the gym leveling up your stats, which should help you start winning some fights and growing your fighting style. There are quest lines that produce enough money for you to focus on fighting and training full time, but if you're tangled up you can always start over from Day 1 and do things differently.

The sooner you unlock the bar and pizza restaurant, the better. It's best to spend roughly 24-36 hours in the gym leading up to a main fight day, but otherwise focus on pizza delivery early on while you make money you need for food and gym fees. The Ultimate League fights will allow you to supplement your income early on, and once you reach yellow they're a major source of income as long as you win. Winning all of the bar fights and then defeating a mid boss in the trailer park will unlock a job that pays even more money. It doesn't last forever, but the money usually gets me to the midgame.

If it's possible to lock the game, I think you'd need to be doing it on purpose, but if you play your cards right it should be possible to become the amateur league champion in 3-4 weeks, and have plenty of money. If you think starting over from Day 1 with a plan would help, it's not a bad idea. 3-4 weeks from now, you could be through the amateur leagues on your terms.
