You can't, when Roy told you to do it, repair until he say something like "Thanks for helping" that all. You can now ask for training.

He can say you to take a beer, select the action Chill with Roy until he say something.

The game should stop you of doing it when Roy thank you, it would be a bit more intuitive this way.

Ha yeah me too. somewhere later in the game I spent at least 10-15 days trying to fix that frigging motor lol.
