Any consequence to skipping fights?

Unless I was to deal with being stuck with $0 and starving I need to take some time getting my financial situation in check.

Is there any real negative effect to skipping out on a fight sign up to work more?

nope, only that you must wait for the next time the fight is available.

That's really good to know. I kept trying to rush everything in order to make the next fight, only to have my playthrough end in disaster.

On the other hand, the gym fights have no real downside except *maybe* from going down the rankings, and you get a few skill points and some happiness even if you lose. At worst you take a little health damage - which doesn't matter if you're delivering pizzas or you're about to go sleep anyway. And if you're going slow, going down the rankings a bit isn't so terrible, you will get down to where you will be winning again, meaning more skill points - I can never get enough SP.
