Stage selection?

I got to the ice hockey stage two times but I can't find a way to select that stage, is it intentional that you have to start from the beginning of the first stage when you get game over at any point in the game?

The game is really hard, specially when playing it solo like I'm doing, has anyone beat the game solo yet?

Edit:
Is it even possible to beat it solo? lol guess that's what I'm asking. Would be cool to unlock the stage you get to, that would make it a little more forgiving when playing solo.
