Stuck with guard and chandelier

It seems obvisous to me that you have to lure the guard with Some gold from your bag on the stairs and then when he walks toward the gold to pick it up you can smash the chandelier on him by losening the rope that holds the chandelier . But it wont work. Each time I do it the guards picks up the gold he's back at his old position before I can drop the chandelier . What am I missing or doing wrong?
