Sound Effects Are Too Quiet (Sound System Option Stuck on "Autodetect")
So I started the campaign in Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered about an hour ago and I've noticed that the sound effects are very, very quiet for all but the center channel of my 5.1 sound system. I have a Creative SoundBlaster ZxR dB Pro outputting 5.1 channels of DTS 96/24 digital audio to my 5.1 custom Klipsch surround speaker system with a Denon AV receiver.

I tried to adjust the audio settings in the game's options menu, but the only option in that menu besides the master volume slider is a switch with left/right arrows to change the type of speaker setup the game will use. Despite there being arrows on this switch the game won't let me choose anything but the "Autodetect" option.

It sounds like the game is playing its audio in a headphones mix or stereo desktop speaker mix because there are a lot of sound effects that are extremely quiet, and beyond a few feet from my character in-game distant sounds are either super quiet or totally silent. I can hear character dialogue and guns firing, but anything past ~10 feet from my character in the game world is either quiet or inaudible. Helicopters and tanks will go by about 50 to 100 feet in-game from my character and be barely audible or silent and gun battles are extremely quiet in-comparison to the original Modern Warfare.

I tried looking in the config.cfg file in the "modern warfare remastered/player2" directory to see if I could force override the audio system option to a 5.1 channel or surround setting. But all of the options parameters in that file use some sort of illegible hexadecimal code, there are some parameters that I can tell are for resolution, textures, GPU etc... but most of them are of the format 0x034849229f - "0" or 0x034849229f "1" etc...

Does anyone know how to force the game to output a proper audio mix, either using the config.cfg parameters or some other way?

Thanks for your help fellow audiophiles! These battles just seem more like art gallery walks with the occasional "plink plink" of weapons and bullets hitting around my character lol.

Any help is appreciated, other than this problem, the remaster is mind-blowingly amazing!

Funny thing I have a Denon reciever and Klipsch speakers as well as my home theater setup. But so far no issues.
Something to try. Right click the speaker icon in the lower right corner of your desktop, goto output devices, right click your reciever and click configure speakers. Make sure 5.1 is selected, run a sound test to make sure that each one is 'firing' (*it should play a seperate tone in sequence, front left, front right, center, subwooder, rear left, rear right)
Thanks, I tried doing your suggestion, everything appears to be in order as far as my PC and audio hardware is configured. The game sounds fantastic on my headphones, but still quiet on my speakers. Other games are as loud as normal and in surround sound as well. I appreciate the suggestion, thank you. It's curious as to why there's an option in the game's settings to change the audio mode but it doesn't let me switch it from "Auto Detect" mode.

the game sounds too quiet in headphones for me. cant hear steps in multiplayer at all :(
I was able to remedy the quiet distant sound effects somewhat by tweaking my Denon AV Receiver's speaker channel levels/gain. I raised the Surround Left/Right and Front Left/Right channels by 5 dB in gain and can now hear the distant game sound effects about 20% louder than before. But I have to reduce the channel gains when I go play any other PC game. I'm a happy gamer now, but I am curious as to what's going on with the game's sound levels. Perhaps the game just has a really wide dynamic range. That's a huge positive for me, I love my games to have as wide a dynamic range as possible so I can be more fully immersed in the game world aurally.
