NOBUNAGA'S AMBITION: Sphere of Influence

Any Comparisons with Sengoku?
I have Sengoku put out by Paradox http://store.steampowered.com/app/73210/ which is another Grand Strategy game based around feudal Japan. From reading about this game, there appears to be many similarities.

I like the Grand Strategy genre, so this one is on my radar, but not sure if I should jump in now, or wait for a sale (I never played the original.)

Has anyone played both? Can you tell me what the main differences are between them?

Thanks

I played both. Nobunaga is more complex in my opinion and also the better game.
Sengoku is ok for a Paradox game but was mainly a test run for the Crusader Kings 2 engine. Your options are pretty limited in Sengoku compared to CK 2 and Nobunaga.
One of the big differences is that you have way more control over your battles in Nobunaga.
You can even enter a 3D battle mode and control your units Total War style in a battle.
Its not nearly as complex as Total War on that side, but gives you way more control then the typical Paradox "throw army blob at army blob" battles.
Also the development of your provinces is a much bigger part in Nobunaga. A lot of different things to build or develop.
You can also play any faction, any small clan in the different scenarios or create up to 1000 custom officers and rulers to implent into your game. You can even import up to 3000 own pictures to create potraits for your custom made characters if you dont like the few hundred KOEI provides.
Also, not a small part, Yhe game looks beautiful for a Grand Strategy game. you can zoom out to a map of whole japan and back in up to districts of a single castle city.

I really would recommend to look up some gameplay videos on Youtube if the game suits your style but im a big Grand Strategy Fan myself and love games like Crusader Kings 2 and for me this is on the same level, entertainment wise.

And i like it way more then Sengoku.

The guy did a great job explaining all the game mechanics and what to expect of this game.

I played a bit of Sengoku and it was war, war, war all over and the combat in that game is non-existent, and the in-depth political/intriegue/family tree stuff didn't really come into play. I am pretty sure you can get Sengoku in a bundle or on a big sale too. OTOH, this game will go on sale too, sooner or later.

With KOEI most likely later, MUCH later. It took them like 8 months to gave Dynasty Warriors 8 a 50% discount in the summer sale, and a lot of their games are never discounted.
You cant even buy them on some other Steam Key Reseller site for cheaper since they do Sales so rarely, so all the key prices are pretty much the same as buying on Steam.

If you really are interested i would buy till Tuesday since you get the 17% launch discount and 3 free scenario dlc which cost 2,99 each. So you save around 20 bucks till then.

If you want to buy later, the Steam Christmas Sale will be the earliest we will see a discount i bet.

Thanks for the quick responses!

I agree with your statement about the battle model in Sengoku. I also have several of the Total War series, and sounds like this game's battles are somewhere in between the two.

I actually find the graphics in Sengoku to be very good, but that's a personal taste sort of thing. I hate bright saturated colors and Sengoku has this nice color theme.

I think I will add this to my wishlist, and maybe if the itch hits hard, I'll go ahead and buy it. I don't mind supporting devlopers at "full price" for good games that I'll play.

Correction, it took them 8 months to give DW8 a 75% discount (daily deal), with my region prices it amounted to 7 USD (snatched it)... I also checked the sales history and seen its been down to -50% at the previous summer sale, which was like straight after release. DW8: Empires had -33% and -50% daily deal this Summer Sale, I wasn't sorry at getting it at full price like three months before though.

But yeah, you either get the new Nobunaga game now, with first week discount, or wait until Christmas sale... And about bundles and resellers, that was my point about Paradox games. I got Sengoku for less than a buck form one such site, and CK2 too... Army management was quite fun. In NA you have on-map autobattles in real time, but you can zoom on each of them for Total War-style tactical combat. Note that there are no unit types in NA: SoI. You have troops, which are infantry with pikes and archers, and you give them horses and muskets as resources. Maybe I'll get used to it. I liked the army composition in Paradox games (foot/guns/cavalry/artillery) and older KOEI games more. Anything is better than "Katana Samurai" atrocity in Shogun 2.

Don't get me wrong, Sengoku is a nice game, I found it more enjoyable than Shogun 2... And I loved the original Shogun: Total War to death. The second one was too arcade-ish for my taste and broken in-battle (reason I dropped Medieval: Total War was knights never charging, patched Shogun 2 had muskets not shooting). I wanted to give Shogun 2 a new chance with mods (most mods just stole KOEI graphics from Nobunaga's Ambition, lol), but it's kinda pointless once we got the real thing on Steam.
