NOBUNAGA'S AMBITION: Sphere of Influence

NOBUNAGA'S AMBITION: Sphere of Influence

What is Japan's obsession with Nobunaga?
Like seriously. Otaku putting out like 15 games and 6 anime about him in the last year alone.

Unification of Japan, even its not really him who did
Japanese Julius Caesar.
No, but really, he's an eccentric and interesting character and Koei has been making this series for more than 30 years, so it's not like they are jumping on what's cool at the moment.
And by the way, Hyouge Mono is the only anime with a decent depiction of Nobunaga (the series isn't even about him), everything else pretty much just borrows his name (although Concerto was pretty fun).
I never heard of this Otaku but if it can publish 15 games & produce 6 anime in one year it must be a very big company o.o;
Can't turn around without knocking over some nazis or terrorists in western media.
It isn't really him as it is the era he was born (and created) in.
I think you're grossly overestimating how many anime and games there are about Nobunaga that came out this past year. But there IS a lot of media of him in general...

But that's because of how important to his country's history he is. It's the same reason Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are so prevalent in American pop culture.
I always thought that Ieyasu should be more celebrated, but everyone loves a badboy eccentric type. :)

Nobunaga is traditionally the bad guy like Cao Cao, his reputation has actually been improved a lot by Koei games.
Ieyasu gets much hate for starting the Tokugawa shogunate, which later became a symbol of corruption and oppression
Seriously though, Oda Nobunaga is /the/ figure of Japanese military history.

Japan had been a mess of infighting for cenuries. Rivalries both between and within major clans resulting in bloodbaths, roving bands of bandits all over the place, etc.

Oda basically looked around around, said "screw this" and proceeded to do something that nobody at the time really conceived of as being possible - conquest of the entirety of Japan. His strategies ranged from brilliant to overtly brutal, but he accomplished more in a few decades than anyone else had managed to do in centuries.

And he didn't live to see his dream fulfilled. It was just within reach, but he was betrayed by some of his men, but by that point the unification was basically complete, and the Warring States period ended.

Interestingly, his media depictions are all over the map. He's as likely to be depicted as a scheming borderline psychotic as he is to be a military genius who's doing what he has to do in order to achieve his goal and put an end to the constant warfare.

He's basically Japan's favourite historical anti-hero.
What is our obsession with Robin Hood? King Arthur? Richard the Lionheart? Every country has different historical figures that they look up to. In Romania they look up to Vlad the Impaler as a national hero. In America, Washington, Lincoln?

Without Nobunaga, there is no Toyotomi and Ieyasu stays Matsudaira and never becomes Tokugawa. I believe that's a large reason why so much of the eventual re-unification is credited to him.
Because he was freaking amazing?
American media likes to shove Lincoln and George Washington into tons of places.

Those 3 are like the holy trinity. Hideyoshi and Ieyasu serve Nobunaga, Ieyasu serve Hideyoshi and then Ieyasu is left alone xD
