NOBUNAGA'S AMBITION: Sphere of Influence

Holy molly coalitions!!
If someone think this game is boring ... they must haven't gotten to a point where they see coaliation battles yet!

Playing a custom clan starting in northern Japan, I managed to ally with the Oda early (snipe their princess Onchi :D, screw Nagayama!), and after some deft diplomacy/backstapping I manage to consolidate the 4 districts in Northern Kyusuu. I start woking my way down to Date. The Oda has been happying follow their story event and cave their way toward Kyoto. Takeda was running rampage and took everything from the right of Mikagawa to the south door of Date (they bypassed the Hojo domain though), they even took a few mountain fortress in Mino from Oda.

As I was fighting Date the Oda invited my to lead the coalition against Takeda, I agreed (learnt from my earlier mistake). To my suprise Date joint the coalition. So basically it's:

Me
Oda
Date

vs

Takeda
Uesugi
Hojo

And for the last 2 hours, it has been a none-stop large scale battle that we're fighting into a deadlock. I had to auto all the management and focus just only battle. I don't think there have been a strategy game that I played in the last 20 years that feel like it. If there was a short reprive in battle it's because we're gathering forces for some massive battle. I just won two 30k vs 30k battle against their coalition trying to capture one more castle, but even after I won I had to run because they had another 30k lining up over the border, but then I also have another 20k moving south as re-enforcement, adding to the various 10k army I leave around strong point. I check the other sides and the Oda also had their own various 20k, 30k battle going over there. Even the tribal soldiers joining on my side seem to number in the 20-30k, their coalition have more though.

And this is just not once a while things either, like I said this has been going for hours, and our battles only getting bigger not smaller, and nobody yeilding an inch. I love it!! It's too often in these kind of game once you become powerful it's a simple steam-rolling the AI until you win, this game seem to have a true end game.

Oh yeah, last night I was playing another game, the Oda also invited me to lead a coalition against the Otomo, since I just took Kyoto and wanted some peace time I turn Nobu boy down, just to look up the map one year later and see the Otomo own half of Japan, I fought them to a stand still by myself for a few years before getting overrun, so learnt that mistake today and took the coalition offer. FUN!

Playing with Extreme and Aggressive AI.

Dragon of Echigo/God of War, Tiger of Kai and Lion of Sagami fighting together ? That is one Dream Team if they ever was one ! But yeah, battles get more and more ridiculous the more time pass, I remember my Uesugi game where only the Shimazu were left, owning all of Kyushu...took me 10 bloody years to break trough Kokura ! With all thoses doomstacks who fought there, I'm pretty sure you can cross the straight on foot haha
Should have taken that Mori and Otomo Coalition offer against them instead of, well, taking all Mori land in Shikoku and Chugoku, made the Shimazu job so much easier lol

Coalitions are definitely awesome. :) Sometimes it gets so hard to take even the slightest territory. Then you have to defend it because they just take it right back! This is one of the best parts of this game.

One lesson to learn though, it seems the AI is pretty smart about offering Coalition. Turn down one and you'll be fighting a vertical battle pretty much. This coalition war only involved half of Japan though.

Wonder how ridiculous it would be if I didn't turn down the Oda's offer yesterday, it would be the Otomo who own half of Japan against the other half of Japan with everyone else :D

Well, in my game, I could have settle for coalition but I didn't and it pass by since they, the Hojo, are no longer #1 but #3. However, ridiculous it could be but they are fighting right now with my ally nonstop ... Hojo vs Date ... ~_~ .

Actually Hojo has a 4 clan coalition against me in my current save and I started as a custom clan that destroyed Takeda and used Kai's large amount of troops to quickly overwhelm my former allies in North and South Shinano. Then after building up my strength to around 60k I invaded the smaller Imagawa & Matsudaira which did not last long against my might, after driving Oda out of Mikawa the Hojo which I devestated twice formed a coalition with a 4-1 ratio me being 1. The funny thing is Oda, Toki, & Matsudaira all coalition members could not stand against me. The whole land is hostile to me, due to the fact I betrayed my allies and rose to power. Only Hojo has the forces to challenge me at 60k to my 89k. Soon I will march on the capital and declare myself the rightful ruler of Japan. Afterall might makes right.

Slowly whittling down a massive faction's castles through massive epic battles is definitely fun. I keep wanting to play one more turn and one more turn until the war is finally over, or at least taking a breather, otherwise I won't feel satisfied.
