Okay, so the Kusabi encounter in Chapter 3 is either bugged or a crock of ♥♥♥♥♥.

First playthrough (Technically. I 100% the original game on PS2 and Xbox way back when), but I do not remember this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at all. If this instant death nonsense was in the game, I do not remember it being this difficult to hide from the boss.

Guide tells me to quickly run up the stairs and crouch in the hiding spot as soon as possible. I pretty much do just that. But there is some serious rubber band AI bull crap going on here, because when I neared the top of the stairs, the minimap goes from being completely blank to suddenly pinging a massive yellow blip right behind me. EXCEPT I ABSOLUTELY KNOW I was kicking up dust and running track miles ahead of that POS as soon as the cutscene ended. I get into the hiding spot, and of course, the ghost is somehow right behind me, pulls me out of the hiding spot, and I'm dead.

What in the absolute ♥♥♥♥ am I supposed to do here?

Check that you don't have a graphic error or anything; just going into the hiding place indicated by the butterfly should be enough, staying still because moving inside the hiding place makes noise and it can hear you.

yeah provided ur always running u should always make it. only thing i can think of is ur losing ur sprint going up the stairs and didnt notice, so lost speed, or maybe ur taking too long transitioning from run into crouching down into the spot, but i didnt do that perfectly either and it worked. All the chase sequences go the same way each time. restart the game and see.

Ok, that certainly doesn't sound normal.
He got me the first time I played this section (because I ran into a dead end near the strairs :P), but usually the hiding would work even if I wasn't constantly running.

This might sound obviuous but make sure the flashlight is off or else hes gonna just pull you outta the spot

It's off because in Kurosawa mansion it's off (in chapter 3 at least, in the last chapter it can be on).
