For instance, lets say you have 3 spells, lesser giant, giant, and greater giant spells and their ranges are 1-15, 10-25, 20-35. When you summon the giant it will have stats based on your spell level, so if you had 2 spells lesser giant and giant, and your level was 15, they would be exactly the same in stats. If you had those 3 spells and you were level 25, casting the lesser giant spell would cap the giants stats as if you were level 15, but giant and greater giant spells would base it at your level 25.
The spells are the same they are just giving you a spell cap range based on your level. Just upgrade your spell as you gain levels, they are ment to be switched out with the higher version of the spell as your level gets higher. The spells are exactly the same except the lesser versions won't level up higher than their "max" cap.
Hope that helps. So your lesser spell might cap at character level 15, regular summon spell maybe 25, and greater spell at 35, so just pick the highest level spell you can cast and your good for a bit.
Spells are based on your casting level (adjusted for intelligence, etc) not the name of the spell. So lesser, greater, regular, super duper awesome high, what ever are all the same, they do the same damage they just have different maximum cap that you can reach. So just pick the highest level spell as you play the game and it will keep increasing as you level up.
