Sid Meier's Pirates!

Sid Meier's Pirates!

Why's the PC Edition so... inferior?
I remember this game from Xbox and finally decided to buy it on PC. Well... I'm disappointed.

Several things seem to be different that add up to be quite annoying:

  • Start menu screen... on Xbox, it had a loop of a pirate swinging a sword and played the theme music. Here? It's pretty much blank.
  • Sneaking - Completely top-down and out of scale. On Xbox, it was in third person.
  • Controls - Everything's numpad here. No options whatsoever for controls.
  • Interface - The xbox one looked nicer... the progress in fencing was a rope marked with a sliding tie, it seemed more aligned, and all around was cleaner and better.
  • Map - I have to pause the game for the map... just pause entirely. On xbox, you could toggle a semi-transparent map that covered the screen. Jokes about travelling by map aside, it's way better than pausing the game for it.
This is among many other things that kind of annoy me. Why is the PC edition such a downgrade? Is there a reason they didn't give it any of the stuff the Xbox version had?

Actually the game on xbox was downscaled as I remember it. Land battles are larger on PC and on xbox you cannot go on land looking for treasure and what not.

Err looks like Ewok beat me to it.

Still, has anyone modded that transparent map? It's just the one thing missing...

As i stated the Transparent map was a compromise because the camera on Xbox could not zoom out as far. However i found a site which does have mods for pirates games altho a quick look i couldnt find any map mods. http://www.hookedonpirates.com/

It was added to Steam way later than this was.

Sweet - loved that game, had no idea it had made it to steam. £5 is a little pricey for something I would only want to dip into for a bit of nostalgia though... I'll have to think about it.

Just wait for a GOG sale instead, it comes around a lot.

Why not mod it yourself, or is that not supported with this game?

From what I've seen, mod support isn't that great with it.

I started on x-box at release and have since re-baught the game entirly on steam because I remember how dope it was...

Some notes on the PC version...
- There are many olds school pirates gamers that still play this that have alot to add to the overall scheme of how newschool players relate to updated material
-Sneaking is a pain and stupid no matter how you look at it and is only necessary in certain situations
-Pc has mods..
-and Im really totally addicted to the number pad style of play, scrw the mouse...I use it in town to speed up scrolling, but num pad is far more supperior to x-box in my opinon at this current point.

Now am I am fully capable of getting the newer pirates for x-box and smashing that, but the sheer edirability of a pc game far out weighs the fun of a console. If you know the right things to do to a game file it can change the whole world hat you play in. That, is just simply something you cant find on console, and seeing peoples mods and tweaks is so fun for me on a game that I've played, then done again and again, and am growing bored with, but still enjoy entirely the framework and parameters of....BLEGH

I dont know where your getting the less features bit. I have this game on console as well but the and the first thing I noticed was that the PC version had MORE features. Landing to look for treasure on Xbox was just "do you want to land here: yes/no?" and then you either got the cutscene if you were in the correct vicinity or nothing and back to sailing if you weren't. You can turn your units on land combat as well which is great since that could lead to you getting flanked. The little sea shanties your crew sings is nice as well.

Transparent map was kind of cool on the console version but its not really needed and probably more useful on console since it would be a hassle to navigate between the complete menu map all the time where as on PC you just click twice and boom your there, then esc to back out.

To be honest, it's still a bit of a hassle on PC. I'd prefer just having it bound to Num_Enter or something and being able to move around freely while looking on the map. If anything, it would probably be better since in higher resolution (1024x768 vs 480p) you could have a higher-resolution map or have it more zoomed out.

I agree though, the sea shanties after battles was a nice touch.
