First: Get a decent ship and a decent crew. Do dances, make friends with royalty, etc.
You need a whole map to see treasure.

Work on your ship. I always found small and fast to be more useful. Dances get you items that help a lot.

No, you can find treasure/lost cities/relatives with only parts of a map. I can usually figure out the location of something with 3/4ths of a map, sometimes less if I'm lucky and know the coastal landmarks.

Try to focus on beating on one country for another (while in a war). St. Kitts is a nice place to be around, because English and Dutch get into a war and they are next door neighbors.

I like to go after pirates first (named, famous pirates). The first port you end up in usually has a tip to a nearby pirate. They give you a good amount of gold, and their ships are pretty upgraded. Especially the higher tier guys, like Blackbeard, who has a nice, upgraded frigate.

The "smart" thing to do is to start on the lowest dificulty, and try to get the best ship (Royal Sloop or Ship-Of-The-Line) and fully upgrade it, get all the specialist crewmembers, get all the items, get married to a beautiful daughter, Find your lost family members, getting max ranks with all the nations.

AVOID: defeating other famous pirates, taking cities, digging up buried treasure, ect. Things that are one time opportunities to gain great wealth.

After completeing part one, quickly earn some money and divide it over and over to reach the max dificulty, and then go out and do all the other things to gain the most money possible and when you divide it up you get the biggest share.

So you can easily get all the fame points for the "best ending"

That's not necesarily the fun thing to do, but it's the smarter way to go about things than being the lowest dificult and getting a ton of gold that you can't keep when you divide it up,

I like starting as the Dutch because they have the least amount of ports. Then systematiclly take over the entire world.
