What's the point of this game?
So i just downloaded this thanks to the Humble Bundle. I've been interested in it for a while but finally got it. I've played about 30 minutes of it and enjoyed it but i can't really figure out what I'm supposed to be doing... I've blown up some ships and sold stuff... is that it? If it is, I'm okay with that but I was just wondering if I was missing anything haha.

Do whatever you want. Live the Life!

but for an actual progression system. You can raise your rank with countries, romance a governor's daugter(The prettier the better, and the game has a pretty clear definition of beauty :p). Defeat the other top 10 pirates, go searching for their buried treasure, and find and avenge your family. whew, think thats everything.

Oh, and find El Dorado!

The idea of the game is that you're constantly distracted by stuff...that's what makes it so fun. Just follow whatever you're interested in and enjoy!

One thing I found was that the game doesn't explain it self... at all lol. I got into a sword fight and had no idea what I was doing, ended up loosing, tried escaping from the city and it told me to climb a wall... but didn't tell me how to... It's a good game but very confusing lol. What do I need to know to play? like what are the essentails?

To escape you must get through the maze of the city without being detected and make it back to your ship.

If you want to follow the main quests I'd suggest doing them early in your career as your age will slow you down when fencing and make it impossible to fight Montalban on the higher difficulties.

Raymondo is a headache beacuse you have to beat him up a few times just to find your four missing family members. Montalban has an annoying final fight. Land battle then Fort fencing. If you lose you have to land battle again. Lame sauce. But worth it.

I remember back in 05 that this was the game I used to play a lot. You have Quests, you can loot, you can team up with nation and plunder, you can be a pirate,... almost anything a pirate can do.

It's a classic game. The point is to have the most money by the end of your pirating career and post it in your board.

There is a background storyline (re-unite your family, kill the Marquis, etc.), but it's really up to you. You're a pirate! Do pirate things!

This game seem similar to Port Royal.
[E] Caladus Feb 23, 2014 @ 10:45am
It is. Except that Pirates! is action based and fast paced. Port Royale 1/2/3 are all considered simulations. They go slower in pace.

The trading system is the main difference. It is very robust in PR compared to P!. Trade routes and town building are just some of the examples.

That said I love both games. Pirates! seems to take the less developed stuff in Port Royale (Dancing/Dueling/Battles) and just pumps them up while making trading a far less viable option for Gold. You're a pirate after all. Go steal stuff. Port Royale is all about patience and simulating running a Carribean trading empire.

Yes, read the manual! There are a lot of things you can do: be a pirate (attacking all the richest targets), be a legitimate privateer working on behalf of a nation (attacking the trade ships of your patron nation's enemies), be part of a nation's navy and go to war (attacking military targets that provide more glory but less wealth), dance with and woo beautiful women, track down criminals and enforce the law (or take bribes), rescue your family, get to the top of the top 10 pirate list either "peacefully" or by killing the competition, take part in land invasions and take over cities (either to enlarge your patron nation or just to loot the city), find buried treasure and lost cities, etc.

@Port Royale
This game is way better compared to Port Royale, sry.

@Thread
The "main" story is to find and rescue your family, the rest is history in your hands - plain and simple. Enjoy!

PS: Played Pirates! Gold over and over and ..

I remember playing this game before steam, but havent played it in a while. I think there are quests that you get from taverns/ cities which you must complete.
