Got a Ship of the line Right Away!!!
Started with the dutch...
Started Raiding English and French cities in the Lesser Antilies..

Next thing i know, i see a NEW WARSHIP... I hover over it... Ship of Line...

I couldn't believe what i was seeing...
I took it...

I got the SoL in about 10 mins or so, in a brand new game... MADNESS... (dutch, 1660, middle difficulty)
In my prior game, played about 18 hours, never saw one.

Been rocking the SoL nonstop since... been at sea 38 months so far... Crew still happy... 120K gold... Only problem is ill ocastionally will sink a ship i want to board... because 48 cannons...

I want to keep going and not divide loot... (but who knows what will happen when i have to go East against the wind... Going to Villa Hermosa to get Monteban...)

I was always a royal sloop guy... but holy moly the SoL just owns the caribean

Oh man that's sick. Haven't seen a SOL since i started playing the game 4 years ago ! If you have a save file from when you find it that would be great.

The Ship of the Line are cool ships! My last game I aquired one along with a couple of tresure ships to hold my cargo. I found out that you need approx 3200 gold for every crew member to keep them happy and when I reached that point I began my quest to find another SOTL, and then another until I hade around 300 happy crew members and 8 SOTL's. It was fun because if you needed to change your flagship for battle I usually had another fully loaded SOTL ready for battle. With that many ships in your fleet the last two or three ships would always run into a reef and sustain hull damage.

I still prefer the royal sloop over the ship of the line although I admit the broadside is impressive

Royal Sloop's the king for me. Nothing matchs it for manuoavability an once all the upgrades are on, it at least evens on broadsides and crew for SOL.

Well, i dont have a save file from early...
But i have one from 1664, 4 years in. i dont think i had split the treasure once yet.

I would gladly share it if you like.

Played this little masterpiece game off and on for many years and my fav ships have changed accordingly - Royal Sloop YES (speed/turn radius good fire power), Brig of War YES (sailing, firepower and awesome tounghness) both great for different reasons and different strategies. Never cared much for the Frigates or seen a Ship of the Line. My current fav is the War Canoe - easy to sail and maneuver at any difficulty - usually untouchable in combat unless I screw up and it is wipred out if a larger ship catches it in a full broadside - so I pack a spare canoe as a finisher in case that happens.

There is just such a satisfying feeling using the SOL, i never used the frigates besides the SOL.
Its big.
Powerful
Strong

You dont have to worry about anything... Except acidentlinally destorying ships on acident.

After you are done with War Cannoe Phase... Maybe your SOL phase will be next. Just finding one is a task more difficult than anything offered in many other games.

The 'best' ship for me seems to depend a lot on the strategy I attempt to follow and the difficulty I try (Rogue is about the hardest level I can manage with a decent score with a 'warmonger' strategy - eg. my country right or wrong - over 50 but usually under 100 final score.) I'll take your suggestion about the SOL - I have to be nearly perfect at the Rogue difficulty to score well so a really big gun like the SOL would provide a little more leeway as the effects of age start accumulating.

The War Canoe is great fun for playing 'The Daughter's and Relatives Game' at an easier level where the penalties of mistakes and aging aren't so severe. Its a ton of fun scooting quickly around the Caribbean chasing down bounties, villans and lost cities and ending up as a Bishop or Governor at the conclusion.

it all depends on the prefered playstyle...

4 me Mail Runner and royal sloop is the best on roge-level.

but what is when you are old and cant fencing? then maybe u need the firepower from a fregat or brig?

edit: today i also got a ship of the line from the dutch. its a big ship and with nearly 50 cannons and over 400 pirates onboard i realy feel me mighty...

funfact is that nearly every ship trys to run away and in battle the other ships give up when i crush into her broadsides... :-)

I *think* the crew wont mutiny if your gold on hand is about 1000 per crew member. It's been a long time since I've seen a SoL but, I find myself grabbing Queen Anne's Revenge very often as the only reliable large frigate I can find.

Screw ship o'the line. Queen Anne's Revenge can outsail, cripple, and force surrender any larger ship.
