True, the base frigate can only have 32 cannons, while the flag galleon and treasure galleon both have 40 cannons.
The large frigate, though, also has 40 cannons. One can be found and captured in every game, because Henry Morgan sails a large frigate. (The ship of the line has 48 cannons - more than any other ship in the game - but getting the game to spawn one can be a bit complicated. That's its own topic, and detailed discussions can be found by searching here or Googling.)
A large frigate gives you the firepower (and crew capacity) of a flag galleon (and more crew capacity than a treasure galleon), but with a faster ship. All 3 of the frigate-class ships (frigate, large frigate, and ship of the line) also seem more maneuverable than galleons, especially if you get the hang of reefing sails, turning, and then raising sails again as you come out of a turn.
When I first hit the high seas I too thought the galleon was the way to go, more guns and more man power of holding a larger crew I thought. Until I was engaged with a Pirate hunter. Let it be known it is true, sank her I did, but the fight was long and hard. The first thing I noticed was, it could out maneuver me on a wim. She turn a flip against the wind to the west, and I struggled the same turn and almost lost her even at half reef. If it wasn't for me 32 guns being upgraded along with fine powder, I would had lost her for sure.
I began to giving mind to the going ons with each battle, and realize, If I seize something more small, like more of a frigate, or something that can hold at lest about 24 guns, play me cards right, and maybe the fight could be more in my favor. And as sure as the sun rise, it was so! I will never sail a Galleon again unless it is captured and on the way to port for sale..
The game is 15 years ago, and I can recall... 13 years ago (maybe?) I was actually using Indian War Canoe. It was at some easier difficulties, and I might want to see it work on higher some day... It easier to get Pinnace though, have two more cannons (War canoe have 8), but the largest, and classified as a "Warship" (have in mind, both Pinnace an War Canoe are "merchant") is Mail Runner (hard to find, can carry "ultimatum" to start a war (if my memory is not playing tricks on me), governor might ask you to escort it), have 12 guns, but wiki says it is a little slower and War Canoe a little faster, but well...
I guess it's easier to stick with good ol' frigate. If you not play a "merchant", what I'll try for fun. I'll see how high I can get with slow merchant ships and not going to sank every enemy ship I see...
I wish I could buy some ships in the shipwright, you know?
Actually I'm on Adventurer using Pinnace, and I'm doing great. I don't know how it will work (or will it work at all) on Rouge... Don't want to get canoe because the natives will be angry for me the entire game (I think that happend back then, in the past... I just get one and they hate me forever).
Anyone know how to get the famous "ship of the line"? Large frigate for sure can be obtain from at least one of the famous pirates; Ship of the line was the largest of it's kind, but I can't recall at least seeing one in-game...
