Sid Meier's Pirates!

This game needs a remake
This is without a doubt the best pirate game to have been made, with AC:BF coming a close second. The pirate genre is so lacking in the gaming industry that a remake of this game, with perhaps a new twist, could really hit it out of the ballpark with popularity and freshness.

My question is why gaming developers arent tapping into the pirate genre?

+1 to KRob's ideas.

Some additional thoughts, ranging from general ideas to a couple specifics:

- Could expand the map of this game - at least as an option - to include more of the South American coast and add Portugal as another European power.

- Similarly, expansion packs to allow the option of playing this game in other parts of the world that also had piracy during the Age of Sail. Indian Ocean, South China Sea / Southeast Asia, and the Mediterranean (Barbary corsairs) all come to mind. Perhaps also privateering during the American Revolution or War of 1812, either as an expansion pack or a spin-off game with similar game play.

- Implementing more robust reputation and relationships with pirates and Indians. Possibly could make true piracy - attack *all* countries - a more viable strategy.

- Perhaps an option to use multiple ships in combat at the same time. This one would require some effort to get the details correct, and it should only be an option (not required). The concept, however, starts with an ability to divide cannons and crew between two (or more) ships prior to naval combat. You could then toggle between control of ships during combat, with general AI instructions ("try to board", "keep a distance and fire cannons", etc.) for the ship(s) that you aren't currently controlling.

- Ability to take less than all of the available recruits at taverns. In other words, if 30 sailors offer to join your crew, you'd have a slider option and could take only some fraction of them. Helpful when trying to keep a crew to a certain size to manage morale. Should be an easy detail to change.

- Ability to choose which cargo to dump when selling or abandoning a ship. Also should be an easy detail to change.
i like all of those.

and i would think that those things could be done without adding a lot of memory requirements, etc.

don't screw it up with imaginary sci-fi things unless it's an add on pack.
don't mess it up with crazy controller options, unless that's an add on.

pirates is a thinking game. keep it that way with these requirements. i would think adding this to the current platform could be a small project that easily pays for itself and then some.

I played the original in 1987. This remake was good, but if they could remake and expand on it for 2021 it would be awesome.

This "is" the remake. The original looked like this.

The original actually had more content and better features
yea played both the original and the genisis version i liked how when in the Captains quarters you saw yourself in the mirror ( and aged over time) yeah the original had good features not shown in later versions which is another reason why some of us would love to see this classic remade one MORE time....

There are some mods on the Hooked On Pirate's forum. Even an East Asia mod!

The trick is that this game has a lot that's hard coded in, so it takes careful hex editing to modify much beyond the surface level.

I've been playing since the NES era; this game and Uncharted Waters: New Horizons are on my list for "if I won the lotto" remakes.
