Strange, original game works fine as i have installed on win 10 systems before just problem with ui not working properly in fullscreen as it was 4:3. Steam version seems to have fixed the ui problem but i am playing on win 7 64-bit.

You may have tried already, but have you tried compatibility mode and setting to win xp service pack 2.
Goto where you have steam installed, steam>steamapps>common>Sid Meirs Pirates!
Right click on file named Pirates! select properties, click compatibility tab and tick Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select win xp service pack 2 from drop down menu. Then click Apply.

If no joy then maybe also worthwhile checking your windows system files:-

To run the System File Checker in Windows 10/8/7, type cmd in start search box. In the result, which appear, right click on cmd and select Run As Administrator.

In the command prompt window which opens, type sfc /scannow and hit Enter.

May take a while:)

Don't get shirty, but if no errors you can discount that from your enquires.

good luck guys

Worked fine three days ago. Ever since Microsoft pulled a fast one and forced me to 'upgrade,' this game (and several others) haven't worked once. Loads of compatibility problems, triple the RAM usage, what a damn fine operating system.

Still hate the OS, but I fixed it! On Windows 8.1, I used VSR to play at a higher-than-normal resolution. When I 'upgraded,' it deleted my AMD drivers for some reason, so I had to reinstall the Windows 10 version-- but I forgot to turn VSR on! That was causing the DirectX error, and once I enabled that and GPU scaling in my drivers, it worked again.

The game initialization screen begins with the spinning wheel, but nothing else ever happens. I have to bring up Task Manager and kill the process to get back to the desktop. The game ran without issue in Win7 x64. I did not have to set compatibility mode in Win7 for it to run. I get the same results (spinning wheel, app not responding) regardless of the compatibility settings in Win10 or if I try to run it with no compatibiity settings. Anyone else with this issue?

It works fine for me on W10. Only 1 crash up to now.

Play in 1440x1080 (use the config) and turn GPU Scaling on in your drivers, that fixed my version of the game.

You could probably push for 1920x1440 if you enable VSR or DSR and have a recent Nvidia/AMD card.
