cant save or choose swords...

from some reason, I can't save the game, load a game or decide on the starting configurations... any idea how to solve this?

I had this issue (the saving, not the swords part) over a decade ago playing an old copy of this game. The issue back then was that I had installed the game (don't ask me why) directly on a system partition, instead of in it's own folder. Reinstalling it properly fixed the issue.
