When you divide plunder, you get the opportunity to change your difficulty level - so if you want to do that....

You could wait until your crew is unhappy and divide it then, so that they are happy again when you sail again.... :steamhappy:

Well, as long as you stay free from being captured, your game will continue indefinitely! :steamhappy:

It depends on how high your Divination skill is.

To extend your game; attack lots of targets; keep ships you defeat; sell them often; keep 2-3 around with triple hammocks; sell merchandise cheap to make room; better to get rid of 200 tons of food at 3-4 gold a pop & make space; than to sell 20 tons of a high price item for 16 gold per...

Make room; sell off un-needed ships; I repair them so I can get max value; either way; it builds up your gold; good battles also kills off a certain amount of possible mutineers; before you settle up; sell all your boats; except your flagship; dual-purpose of more gold, & if you have 5-600 pirates it disposes of them; so the shares (your's mainly) is larger.....

Eventually, your crew will become unhappy if you don't divide the plunder. As long as the amount of gold you have per crew memeber increases quickly enough, your crew's morale will stay high. But as you spend time on long missions such as hunting for missing relatives or lost cities, morales will decrease, and you may end up with deserters taking your plunder or a mutiny. Luckily, gaining gold isn't the only way to keep the ratio high. ;)

You can increase the amount of gold you have by killing off your crew. There are number of ways to do this, but the safest is to attack a city where the garrison is larger than your crew. If you lose, you just end up back on your ship with a greatly reduced (yet much happier) crew. If you accidentaly win, you still lose crew members and you end up with some gold. If the garrison is small enough (less than a hundred or so) then instead of having a land battle you end up swordfighting with the captain and can end up in prison, but generally the garisson captains are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ swordfighters.

(Be careful when killing off your crew, though. If you have too many ships to man, you can lose some along with the plunder in them. A couple of very large ships will do you well.)

A great example of when this technique comes in handy is when you're after Marquis de la Monteblan. You need a huge crew (around 300) to match his army of mercenaries, but after you defeat him you're generally out in the gulf with only a couple of Spanish cities nearby and a much larger crew than you should need. So, attack Campeche or one of the other nearby citites that has a huge garrison. Your crew gets whittled down to a reasonable number yet morale goes up.

So much for all for one and one for all.

Note, your crew goes back to forty when you divide the shares. I learned the hard way...trying to take Port Royale (Thats how it's spelt in game...no idea why...) with 40 men..:steamsalty:

You don't tecnically need to divide the plunder, but as time goes on your crew will get more unhappy, and will reload guns slower, and may even mutiny. If you have more than a specific amount of gold, the crew will never mutiny. However, if you divide and start a new crew, their morale will be higher and they will be more efficient in operating cannons.

From a role playing perspective, your pirate doesn't technically own the gold on the ship. When the plunder is divided, he gets a share. The rest goes to the crew and the officers. So, from a role playing perspective, your character doesn't technically have any money until he divides the plunder.

From a game play perspective, when you divide the plunder, you "bank" your achievements in terms of gold towards your final gameplay score. If you never divide, if you're wiped out one time (i.e. lose all your ships) you got nothing.

There's a value coded in the game, 1000 gold per crew member, they will never get unhappy and never mutiny, you will not need to divide plunder.

I'm pretty sure that what happens is this: once you have accumulated 1,000+ gold for each crewmember, then they don't become unhappy and never mutiny (e.g. 75,000 gold would prevent 75 crewmembers from becoming happy).

Yeh, that's correct, but your guy still ages, so eventually you won't be able to win a swordfight no matter what bonuses you're wearing and if you want a decent score you should retire before that. That age depends on difficulty level, because lower diff is slower and you can still win a long time if you know how to do the duel minigame well.

The thing about dividing plunder, besides changing difficulty level, is a time out while your guy ages, and also you start back only with the flagship and money on hand. If you can amass 1k per sailor, you'll have more time on the seas earning points than sitting around getting old.
