You could wait until your crew is unhappy and divide it then, so that they are happy again when you sail again....
Make room; sell off un-needed ships; I repair them so I can get max value; either way; it builds up your gold; good battles also kills off a certain amount of possible mutineers; before you settle up; sell all your boats; except your flagship; dual-purpose of more gold, & if you have 5-600 pirates it disposes of them; so the shares (your's mainly) is larger.....
You can increase the amount of gold you have by killing off your crew. There are number of ways to do this, but the safest is to attack a city where the garrison is larger than your crew. If you lose, you just end up back on your ship with a greatly reduced (yet much happier) crew. If you accidentaly win, you still lose crew members and you end up with some gold. If the garrison is small enough (less than a hundred or so) then instead of having a land battle you end up swordfighting with the captain and can end up in prison, but generally the garisson captains are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ swordfighters.
(Be careful when killing off your crew, though. If you have too many ships to man, you can lose some along with the plunder in them. A couple of very large ships will do you well.)
A great example of when this technique comes in handy is when you're after Marquis de la Monteblan. You need a huge crew (around 300) to match his army of mercenaries, but after you defeat him you're generally out in the gulf with only a couple of Spanish cities nearby and a much larger crew than you should need. So, attack Campeche or one of the other nearby citites that has a huge garrison. Your crew gets whittled down to a reasonable number yet morale goes up.
So much for all for one and one for all.
From a role playing perspective, your pirate doesn't technically own the gold on the ship. When the plunder is divided, he gets a share. The rest goes to the crew and the officers. So, from a role playing perspective, your character doesn't technically have any money until he divides the plunder.
From a game play perspective, when you divide the plunder, you "bank" your achievements in terms of gold towards your final gameplay score. If you never divide, if you're wiped out one time (i.e. lose all your ships) you got nothing.
The thing about dividing plunder, besides changing difficulty level, is a time out while your guy ages, and also you start back only with the flagship and money on hand. If you can amass 1k per sailor, you'll have more time on the seas earning points than sitting around getting old.
