That is where I play and even tried it on easiest.
You don't have to save the game before a dance.
The game automatically saves under "Arrival" as soon as you pull into port. Things like how much land you are awarded, whether you're getting a promotion, or get to dance with the daughter are pre-determined.
What the Mysterious Stranger offers you is semi-random, so if you get something good, you might want to save the game then.
That is very useful information, as I sometimes attack wrong ship (Allied, or the one I'm supposed to escort) by accident- when there are more ships at one place. And even though I don't fire a shot and head the other way immediately, it still counts as an attack... Thank you
Here's what you can try ...
First off, the crew happiness depends on gold per person. Length of time at sea might also be a factor, not sure.
OK, get no more crew members than it takes to fill the one boat, "Revenge". Maybe a little less even. What is that, 75? I don't remember, say it's 50 or 60. You don't need any more crew or more boats unless you plan to take over cities.
Choose a non-Spanish sponsor. On "Easy" it is not difficult to get a Letter of Marque from all four of the Powers, but for our purposes just get the one. Say, the French. (Always liked their cooking)
Ok, just keep sailing back and forth between Tortuga and Santiago. They're quite close to each other, so you'll spot a good number of Spanish vessels. ATTACK THEM ALL!
You might want to explore a little, just for the purposes of finding Shipwrights who can add nice goodies to your boat. Stuff like copper plating (turn faster), bronze cannon (shoots farther) and cotton sails (sails faster) are very nice to have. But after you get some goodies, head back to your regular commuting pattern.
If you want to mix it up (or the governor's daughter reminds you of a pet mastiff you once knew) scoot on over to the Florida Keys. Set up your commute pattern similarly, only it's back and forth to Havana. That's probably even better, as Havana is a larger city and more likely to see Treasure Ships. Again, ATTACK EVERY SPANISH VESSEL.
Forget about Spices, Luxuries, etc. Take the Gold, enough guns to have spares (24), and enough Food to last at least 6 months (but no more than 12, you don't need it).
Each time you successfully attack a Spanish ship, head back to your French port to see if that merits an increase in your land holdings and a promotion. Promotions are good, you can fix any damage for free.
Repeat until your crew is smiling. Quick quick quick quick, the longer you take, the less happy your crew will be. And do not get more crew members unless your numbers get too low to properly run the ship. Get more at maybe, oh, 40 or so. Maybe less even.
The really big problem is, the more crew you have, the smaller the $$ per person is, the less happy they'll be. Ideally, run the ship with just you, except it'll take too long to load the cannons.
Once your crew icon shows a nice big smile, then start worrying over finding your relatives and that dastardly Marquis Montalban (with his luxurious Corinthian Leather)
This is all assumes the French are at war with the Spanish, and there's 9 out of 10 chance they are. But for that 1 out of 10, somebody else almost certainly is. That doesn't affect your using a French city as a home port, they just won't reward you as much for sinking Spanish ships.
Port Royale is a good English alternative against Santiago, and Nassau is good against Havanna. The Dutch have much fewer options, but there is Curacao down south that's practically surrounded by Spanish ports.
It's probably a good idea to get all your upgrades before the Spanish ports won't let you stop there anymore. The game randomly assigns these, so it would be a pain to have to take over a city just get cotton sails. After you've attacked a certain number, they start shooting at you before you even get close. But take heart, you can also visit a friendly Missionary nearby who might take pity on you and beg for your amnesty.
I wouldn't bother escorting new governors to their new position. Unless it's for a country you're supporting, there's no point. Like, you've been blasting the Spanish to smithereens, and you escort a Spanish mayor to a Spanish port. Think they'll let you in now? Nope.
Another thing they might get you into a Spanish port (or any other port for that matter) is to sink other pirates and Indian war canoes. The four Powers are always fighting each other, but they're on the same side against the Pirates and Indians (sounds a baseball game, don't it?)
You might try concentrating on those after the missionary gets you amnesty, that way you can get in good with the Spanish without upsetting the other Powers. But just long enough to get whatever you need from the Spanish, like an upgrade, or Baron Raymondo, or some other treasonous scoundrel you're looking for. Then you can get back to the ATTACKS!
Just for reference, the island of what is today Cuba and that area is good for finding other random Pirates. There are a number of Pirate settlements in the area. The area to the south, like around Panama and Nicaragua area is good for finding random Indians. There are a number of Indian settlements in the area.
Excuse me. "Native Americans." Sorry.
Find my "Skip Dancing + All cheats!" guide (in the steam "Guides" section) once the guide is approved (I just published it now so I don't have a link for it yet, sorry).
i.e. the "Guides" tab at the top of this page.
